Just another end of year musings blog post!

I don’t think I’ve had such a big year since 2005. That was the year I made the very difficult decision to leave a long term relationship that just about everyone else imagined was perfect. It was probably the biggest leap out of my comfort zone ever so when later that year, aged 26, I decided to move from London to Sydney (where I knew two people and had never been before) and everyone said I was brave, I really couldn’t see it. Moving to Australia was easy. And exciting.

I was only supposed to stay for a year but, after about four months, I knew I was never going home for good. That was almost five years ago and this year has been a major biggy to beat even that!

At the beginning of the year I started the long and drawn out process of applying for permanent residency. Around April, when this blog turned one, I seriously started thinking about its future, spurred on by the encouragement of my fiancé, friends, colleagues and industry heavyweights. The prospect of turning Interiors Addict into an actual job seemed too exciting to really believe. Nevertheless, I started making plans to eventually go part time,  putting in place a succession plan at my magazine job.

In June, my now fiancé popped the question underneath the Harbour Bridge. I started planning our wedding. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. I know, I know, this is starting to sound like a bad novel. [Read more...]

4 great interiors things coming in 2013

1. American heavyweights Pottery Barn, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma are all hitting Australian shores for the first time ever and opening in Bondi, date to be confirmed.

2. The Block All Stars starts in the New Year featuring four favourite double acts from previous series. I’ve already had a look around the houses in Bondi and I can’t wait to see how they all turn out. In my opinion, they can’t fail to sell for a small fortune! [Read more...]

The dentist’s surgery with a design difference

I tell you what, my dentist’s surgery looks nothing like this! This project was shared by Natasha Connor of Ego Squared Design Consultants in WA.

Natasha’s not entirely sure how she got into the niche of private practice healthcare interior design but she’s owning it!

“We are quite proud of our latest project (The Dental Quarters here in Perth) as we incorporated our love for trawling eBay and antique shops for one-off items. This project has a Hollywood Glamour theme as the building it’s in used to be a theatre. We sourced signed head shots of stars and movie posters for the feature wall in the waiting area and combined it with a gorgeous French antique lounge suite.”

She adds: “We are used to creating sleek, minimal, modern interiors for dental surgeries as that has been the style for so long. Dentists are pretty conservative and convincing them to try something new or different can be a full time job!” [Read more...]

Meet Melanie and David of Hardwick & Cesko, who don’t take their home too seriously

Melanie and David Hardwick, who run furniture and homewares brand Hardwick & Cesko, have lived in this Annandale terrace since marrying six years ago. These days, they share it with daughter Evie.

They’ve created a stylish yet practical family home with plenty of storage. It helps, of course, that David is a furniture designer and a dab hand with a toolkit. Melanie’s advice is: “Don’t rush in, wait for the right piece and develop your spaces over time. Also, have a plan, even if it’s a loose one, to stop you falling in love with something in a shop that’s not right for your home.” So true!

She adds: “We believe it is all about quirky storage space, like turning the fireplace into a bookshelf, or toy space, or even a trip to Ikea can inspire for kids storage solutions. You can’t be too precious with your pieces as kids get their fingerprints and food on everything. We find we use our walls a lot with shelving, mirrors, Evie’s artworks and hooks: they can look cute and are practical at the same time.”
