This luxurious al fresco space with custom concrete furniture, gas fire, operable pergola roof and ceiling fan, was certainly not very inspiring before interior designers Birdblack Design got their hands on it recently, after already having made over the owners’ inside space.

“Repeat clients returned with a vision to completely transform their exterior space into something as special as their home’s interior,” designer Laura Holmes says. “Having previously collaborated with them, we understood their lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and love for coastal living. With their property situated just across the road from the beach, our goal was to create an outdoor environment that embraced its stunning surroundings while offering comfort, privacy, and effortless style.”

They thoughtfully designed and crafted a relaxed haven where the clients can unwind, entertain, and fully enjoy life at home, right across from the beach in Thirroul on the NSW South Coast.
“Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the seaside setting, we incorporated soft textures, durable materials suited to the coastal climate, and a calming colour palette that reflects the sand and sea. The result is a welcoming outdoor retreat that seamlessly blends functionality and tranquillity: perfect for quiet mornings with coffee, long afternoons in the sun, and relaxed evenings with family and friends.”

The space features a large custom concrete dining table, generous and comfortable seating for entertaining, and an outdoor gas fireplace to ensure the area can be enjoyed during the cooler months.

We love the striped effect caused by the shadows of the pergola roof that covers the al fresco space. “To ensure year-round usability, this was installed to provide protection from the east-facing sun. It allows the space to be opened or closed as needed, responding to daily weather conditions. A ceiling fan was incorporated to promote air circulation and maintain comfort, while protection from both sun and rain, paired with the gas fireplace, allows the space to be enjoyed in every season.”

Jealous much? We certainly are!
