After buying an extended home, the new owners needed help with pulling together the new and old halves of the house and adding custom joinery, furniture and finishes throughout. What better an idea than to call in an expert, and they did so with interior designer Joanne Yeomans.

The five-bed detached heritage home sits in the coveted Sydney suburb of Drummoyne with water views, and is home to a family of four. “Having completed a lengthy renovation and extension, we were brought in to help with custom joinery, furniture and finishing touches throughout,” Joanne explains.

“The older, original part of the home (entry corridor and formal living room) was dated and needed love. The new renovation (by others) included an extension with open plan living/dining and kitchen, plus new bathrooms and master bedroom upstairs. These spaces, although beautiful in their own right, needed softening and finishing with furniture, art and colour and the client wasn’t sure where to start.”

Joanne and her tea, from Issy & H Creative, designed custom joinery (four built-in bookcases and an entertainment unit) to complete the space, then introduced new furniture throughout and added finishing touches with art, rugs and decorative pieces – all in a navy and gold colour scheme.

For the kitchen/dining/living room and alfresco, they specified new furniture and styled the spaces throughout. “The renovation design was very neutral with accents of dark timber and marble so we introduced lots of pops of colour through artwork to create interest and personality,” Joanne added.

They also added furniture and styled the master bedroom and new bathrooms upstairs. “The darker toned bathrooms upstairs were really fun to work with and we went earthy with towels and accessories. The master bedroom is light and airy with blues and whites reflecting the water views.”

Adding colour to the monochrome spaces made the biggest difference. “The navy accents in the formal living room make the original gold chandeliers come to life, and the Anya Brock More of the Night landscape in the dining room sets the scene for the rest of the space.

The biggest splurge was the Waves Dining Table in whitewashed oak, paired with the Black x Stone Franka dining chairs, both from Casa Blanco. The biggest bargain were the bathroom towels: Livia Spinach & Beach Reversible Floral Towel from Adairs.

Joanne loves how the vibrant colours in the living/dining space bring the renovation to life, and its connection to outdoors. The Anya Brock artwork and GlobeWest buffet are one of her favourite combinations.

“I love the two-tone finish and curves of the bookcases in the formal living room and the navy upholstered window seat with patterned bolster cushions. I love the custom bedhead and serene, calming feel of the master bedroom. And I also love the dark moody feel of the upstairs ensuite bathroom and how we have embraced an earthy autumnal feel in here with olive greens and rusts. I particularly like the bath caddy although I worried their gorgeous German Shephard puppy might decide was a tug toy (she apparently doesn’t!)”
