Believe it or not, there was no brief for the interior designers who created this dreamy home library space. They were working elsewhere in the home when they noticed the former storage space, and to cut a long story short, proceeded to make something out of nothing!

“While in the lounge room, we noticed two doors above that led to roof space, but there was no direct access,” says Sarah Nolen of Birdblack Design. “A ladder was needed to reach it. Inside, we found a collection of stored items: boxes, suitcases, and various collectibles, tucked away and forgotten.”
Curious, they climbed up, looked inside, and immediately saw an opportunity to transform the space into something special.
“With ample headroom, we proposed creating a private retreat, a reading nook and library for our clients, turning an overlooked storage area into a grand and functional space.”
Upon entering the retreat, you’re met with an atmosphere reminiscent of a private library. Bookshelves and storage line both sides, creating a cosy and functional environment.
At the heart of this retreat is an oversized, deep daybed, complete with wall lights.
“What was once an overlooked storage area has now become one of our client’s favourite spaces—one they had never even imagined as a possibility,” Sarah says.
“Our primary concern was ensuring the living area below remained open and unobstructed. By tucking a spiral staircase in the corner, we maintained an efficient furniture layout while providing seamless access to the retreat space above.
“This transformation truly created something out of nothing.”
