Creating a unique and charming nursery for your little ones doesn’t have to break the bank or take a lot of time. Roisin and Zac Tarrant headed to Bunnings to transform the nursery for their identical twin girls over one weekend, spending just two two-hour blocks to complete the project. Here’s how you can do it too.
Supplies and preparation
Head to your local Bunnings store to gather the supplies you’ll need. Pick up MDF (6mm MDF Panel Standard 2440 x 1220mm) and paint. For Roisin and Zac, the room they were working with already had a great set of wardrobes, so they wanted to modernise them by painting them blue to match the rest of the trim and handles.
Creating custom handles
Roisin and Zac wanted to match their wardrobe to the floral theme of the room, so they decided to create custom floral handles using wood. Their step-by-step process:
- Draw and cut out your desired shapes: Hand draw flower shapes on the MDF and cut them out using a jigsaw cutter (Ozito 680W Pendulum Jigsaw Cutter with 3 Blades). Once you have your flower shapes, cut them in half to use as handles for the cabinet doors.
- Attach the handles: Attach the flower halves to the back of the MDF with cut-out blocks using PVA wood glue (Parfix 250mL PVA Wood Glue). This setup will allow you to screw the handles into the doors securely.
- Painting: Paint the handles individually in a nice blue color to match the rest of the trim. After painting, wait for them to dry before attaching them to the wardrobes.
