Home renovations can provide more than just an aesthetic lift โ if done well, the reinvention of a space can breathe new life into it and its inhabitants too. Such was the case when interior designer Gaylene Drew cast her creative eye over this four-bedroom home in Queenslandโs Tannum Sands. โThe property was dark and dated and nothing had been changed since the home was built in the 1980s! There was a pink corner bathtub, pink tiles, dark timber kitchen and random island bench for the stove,โ says Gaylene of the property that sits on sprawling acreage.
Home to a family of four with two young children and pets, the family envisioned a home that was not only brighter and fresher but also more conducive to family interaction and entertaining. โThe home was purchased while the kids were young, but now as they were growing, the owners wanted a home that was fresh, clean and where everything had its place,โ says Gaylene. Overall, a palette of warm timber, light paint and cabinetry, stone benchtops and brushed nickel tap ware was used to brighten up the home.
The focal point of the home, the kitchen underwent a full aesthetic overhaul while a cocktail/bar area was added too. โWith the large entertaining area and pool out the back these clients like to have people over and enjoy this space โ they also enjoy mixing up a yummy cocktail when they do,โ says Gaylene.
Aside from overhauling the kitchenโs materials palette (the bright blue is a playful touch), Gaylene removed the central island bench which greatly improved the workflow in the space. A multifunctional island bench ensued and it includes space for prepping, cooking and serving โ the island houses a stove, oven, spice drawers, storage and a breakfast bar area for sitting. Sitting opposite is the cleaning zone (think sink, bins and dishwasher) while a coffee nook completes the room.
โI like the addition of the colour in the kitchen and bar area. This colour also features in the master bedroom, and I love that these are small areas that can easily be repainted or swapped if the client tires of aqua,โ says Gaylene.
The ensuite and main bathroom were renovated also โ the wall between them was moved to allow more space for the otherwise small ensuite. โThis created a more user friendly ensuite without taking away from the functionality of the main bathroom.โ
