I’m so over Keep Calm and Carry On

By Jen Bishop •

FacebookPinWhatsAppEmailTweet

This weekend I listed my pink Keep Calm and Carry On print on eBay. A sad day. When I bought it four years ago from Keep Calm Gallery (who incidentally have some AMAZING stuff) in the UK, (because they weren’t selling them here in Australia then) nobody else had one. And then when everyone else started to cotton on, at least mine was different because it was pink. But now the design has been so done I just can’t have it in my home anymore. I’m sick of seeing it!

The same happened to me with tram scroll art. I was an early adopter of that too. Now every second home has one (vintage, screen print or wall decal). Sigh. I still love it though and black and white things are slow to date so it’s staying! For now.

How about you? What trend, which you loved when you first saw it, have you now got sick of seeing? Chevron? Blackboard paint? Cowhide rugs?*

*Disclaimer: I love all those things.

I've been meaning to post about getting out of hos I've been meaning to post about getting out of hospital in time for Christmas and spending a magical time with my beautiful family and friends for days now, but I was staying in the moment and off my phone. My wish came true and it really was amazing to enjoy that Santa magic.

Sadly, the day after Boxing Day, I ended up back in an ambulance after an internal bleed where my hemoglobin levels dropped dangerously low. I'm not very good at explaining the medical side, but after surgery and a couple of nights in ICU, I'm now on a ward and recovering well, hoping I get to return home ASAP.

I have so many thank yous to say for the incredible GoFundMe donations and kindness and support I've received. I really am blown away and so grateful. There are so many good people in the world, both strangers and those I'm lucky enough to know.

And having now received 6 bags of blood transfusion myself, another huge shout out to all donors. I felt so good to know I've done my bit donating over the years when I received someone else's life saving donation. Please consider doing the same and potentially saving a life.

Before ending up back in hospital, I was settling in well at home with daily visits from nurses and I'm hoping I can get back to that new normal again soon.

Thank you again to everyone for their kindness. And biggest thanks to @damianfrancis for truly spoiling me at Christmas and once again holding the fort at home. Our boys are so lucky to have you ❤️

Trigger warning: cancer. Home is SO important to Trigger warning: cancer.

Home is SO important to me, I even made a job out of talking about it. And having been stuck in hospital for 5 weeks, away from my sanctuary and my boys, I've never craved it more.

I'm going through the hardest time of my life and I'm finally sharing it here in the way I hope you've always known me to; with authenticity, realness and hope.

I've been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's devastating and life-changing news and feels very vulnerable to share. Sadly it's causing me so much physical pain, I can't manage it at home. Being stuck in hospital, on top of keeping this secret, has been very isolating.

Our precious boys are our number one priority and we are being very well supported by our medical team and amazing friends and family. I can't say enough about the huge role my husband is playing in keeping us together.

I've continued to work when possible because I love it and it's a big part of my identity. I want as much normalcy, distraction and positivity as possible right now. Some days I put my lipstick on and face the day with gratitude for all the good stuff, like my world class friends and amazing healthcare. But I'm only human and other days, I just can't.

Despite the gravity of the situation, I only have to look at my boys to know I cannot give up hope.

Thanks for all the love and support I know you'll throw my way but please respect my boundaries by not asking medical questions or making medical suggestions, and know that I won't be able to reply to everyone.

This beautiful community has supported me for over a decade and I'm sure your kindness will help me no end. And if you want to support me, keep reading the blog so my work isn't wasted!

I'll still be the main point of contact for Interiors Addict but things will look a little different as I continue my chemo (3 rounds down) and get used to my new way of life.

Right now, my only wish is to be discharged to my family for Christmas.

Because I can no longer give blood, if anyone would like to make a festive donation of blood or plasma on my behalf and share it with me here, that would really make my day ❤️

PS. Nurses are worth their weight in gold.

I couldn’t agree more! Now it is appearing on umbrellas, coffee mugs and kids water bottles too and I’ve had enough.

I still love chevron but I really hope it isn’t headed down the same path!

I’m so with you Em! I mean, these things get popular for a reason but still… 🙂

I doubt it too. A pattern is a pattern. Surely it can’t become offensively overdone? We hope not!

    I am with you.
Its like commercial radio. You like a top 40 song the first few time but when its on rotation every 30 minutes it becomes grim reaper.

I still have a love of the vintage tram scrolls especially when the black has faded to a charcoal grey and the sides have that lovely fraded look from years of use.

Blackboard paint is still a favourite but in the right hands, used well – like Brooklyn designer Dana Tanamachi!

    Agreed!
Personally I’m pretty tired of seeing kath kidston style boutiques selling fabrics, mugs, bags, you name it.. Its very pretty with its pastel colours and flowers but I’m just bored of seeing so many boutiques popping up around the UK claiming to sell vintage but really just being the same as many of the other “vintage style” boutiques selling mass produced products.

That hasn’t hit Australia in a big way yet Abigail but I know exactly what you mean from the last couple of times I’ve been home!

  6. Mister B says

Not exactly a trend, but a furniture item. Long since passing from “design classic” to “design cliche” – The Eames lounger/recliner (and copies of) heads my list of Done to Death. Ugh!

    • interiorsaddictinteriorsaddict says

      April 9, 2012 at 9:38 am

That’s so sad because it is only all the cheap replicas that have made it that way. I think it is a beautiful design. I can see where you’re coming from though!

      • Mister B says

        April 9, 2012 at 9:51 am

Yes, maybe I should have said “and especially cheap replicas of” In fact, cheap replicas of any design classic are something I would like to see the end of!

  7. Mandy says

Decals of any sort!!! I loved them when I first saw them a number of years ago. But seriously, enough is enough. That, and birds. And bunting. And cupcakes. And cake pops. And jars of colour coordinated sweets. And matryoshka measuring cups. Oh, the list goes on and on…….!!!!

  8. Little Miss says

    April 9, 2012 at 10:45 am

Very disappointing isn’t it. I’m itching to know though what the “next big thing” is as far as interiors and crafts go, so I too can jump on the train early and enjoy the ride before every other man and his dog start piling on. Not to mention the cheap imitation pieces that make them look pathetic. Help anyone? I mean, who sets these trends anyway? Would love a heads up but for the record, houndstooth is trying up mark its territory again this season. I’m not a fan but I think it’s going to happen if not next year.

  9. Thea says

    April 9, 2012 at 10:50 am

So with you! I hate everything that is copied to death, “keep calm..”, tram scrolls and yes, even chevron patterns. I cringe when people ask me if I will screen-print bus / tram scrolls for them. I won’t because I try really hard to be original and surely, there’s enough out there if you really want one.

  10. Laurenskye says

    April 9, 2012 at 10:57 am

I hear you! I loved it a few years back but it just became over-saturated. I’m a huge chevron fan, but lately feel myself being drawn to herringbone instead.

I agree with the wall decals too. I loved them but now they are a bit done to death also.

I love my tolix stools – not much else available at that price point that is nice. Oh well if you love it – it shouldnt really matter – you are the one that has to live with and classic design should be ageless. THEN there is fads!
