This modern inner Melbourne home recently underwent an extensive renovation. The project transformed key areas, including the kitchen, living room, dressing area, library and laundry. “Initially constrained by an outdated layout and insufficient natural light, the primary goal was to elevate the residential experience by integrating more natural light, expanding the kitchen footprint, and introducing a modern design approach throughout the home,” says interior designer Léo Terrando.

Originally built in the 1980s, the home has been redesigned to cater to a discerning mature couple, aligning with their sophisticated lifestyle. Located in Hawthorne East, an area celebrated for its characteristic appeal and affluent demographic, the residence now seamlessly integrates contemporary design principles with the style and charm of its locale.

The updated kitchen features elegant Signorino Volakis Flower honed natural stone countertops and drawer fronts, complemented by an architectural Tasmanian oak timber batten pantry. The kitchen drawers are lined with Laminex Oyster Grey internal facings and all cupboards and drawers are elegantly lit from within. The harmonious blend of natural stone and timber battens beautifully complements the timber floors and stainless steel finishes.

In the living area, a striking Signorino Calacatta Irish honed marble fireplace and a black accent wall housing a flat-screen television create a focal point. Both the fireplace and TV are flanked by mirror cupboards on either side, enhancing the sense of space. Carefully curated furnishings, including a Flexform Sofa, a freestanding armchair from Moroso, a Criteria Collection side table, a burnished brass and black glass coffee table from Classicon and a Rakumba lamp, create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Upstairs, the custom library showcases timber-framed doors with Archant woven stainless steel mesh inserts, adding unique texture and depth. “The library door handles are an exquisite feature composed of leather-wrapped handles set upon grey mirrors with a curved timber border. Subtle backlighting highlights the beauty of the displayed contents,” says French-born Léo, whose design studio is based in Byron Bay with projects Australia-wide.

Opposite the library, is a luxurious dressing area. It features a large custom mirror with a black frame, a Bocci pendant from Space Furniture, and marble bench tops and drawer fronts. “This elegant marble, sourced from Gladstone Granite, is a prominent feature in this space, creating a chic and minimalist aesthetic.”

Two builders were involved in the extensive renovation: Bespoke Builders completed the downstairs areas and Well Grounded completed the upstairs.
“This home masterfully blends modern minimalism with the home’s original charm, creating a refined and functional living space for a mature couple. Through thoughtful design and high quality materials, the project elevates the residential experience, making it a standout in contemporary home design,” says Léo.
