It was an easy choice to replace the existing yellow and aqua kitchen with doors falling off their hinges! The owner of this beachside home in Agnes Water, brought interior designer Gaylene Drew on board to help give it a complete overhaul, inspired by her Canadian roots.
“The brief was to update the existing kitchen and bring it to life with modern finishes and colours influenced by the clientโs home country of Canada,” says Gaylene, who loved the challenge. “The new kitchen was to work in harmoniously with other renovations to wet areas in the home and a new layout was to take advantage of the ocean views from the property that sits upon a hill. The family often have lots of children and visitors during the holiday season and they wanted a space that enabled everyone to interact in comfort and not feel closed off or secluded from the dining, lounge and large deck.”
The existing space was dated, with yellow cabinetry, an aqua benchtop and drawers that wouldnโt shut. “It was closed off by an oddly located corner pantry and ceiling-hung rangehood over a dividing breakfast bar. It was disconnected from the large deck with no direct access.”
Completely flipping the kitchen over into the dining room made the biggest difference and connected the kitchen with the living and dining areas. “By installing a large sliding door in the new dining area, greater indoor/outdoor connection and flow was created. The new design allowed us to take advantage of wall space for upper cabinets and incorporate a large island bench for gathering or watching TV whilst doing the nightly cook and clean. The old kitchen is now a social dining and relaxation area with a large bench seat for practical storage and taking in the ocean views and breezes.”
Gaylene loves how the main living spaces all work together now. “I also love how the style references the Canadian and American style kitchens, especially since the client is Canadian. Plus, the space feels so much bigger and lighter now, even though no extra meterage was added.”
