This Arts & Crafts home in Melbourne’s Elsternwick was very original before its recent transformation. Bold wallpaper, heavy curtains, mismatched tiles and dim lighting were not making the most of its heritage charm.
Flowe Interiors were brought in to reconfigure the rooms and create a more functional layout for its family of five, featuring a clear hallway that leads into the living area. The addition of natural light, combined with fresh finishes and new flooring, transformed the previously dark and dated home into a luxurious yet practical space.
“It was tired, dark & daggy!” explains interior designer Fiona Lowe. “I love blending the charm of the past with contemporary design. Many of my projects are in Elsternwick and Bayside, areas known for their tree-lined streets and traditional homesโVictorian, Edwardian, California Bungalows, and more.
“These architectural details deserve to be preserved, celebrated, and restored. This house does just that, while seamlessly transitioning into a spacious, light-filled open-plan living area that’s perfect for modern family life.”
The original interior preserves the handcrafted details of its era, with intricate staircase features, wall panelling and windows carefully restored and refinished.
The modern extension extends these finishes into a spacious open-plan layout, thoughtfully divided into two distinct zones defined by complementary colour palettes.
“At one end, the living area showcases dark joinery, a sculptural rendered fireplace, and deep blue cladding. At the opposite end, a light-filled kitchen features soft blue tones and blonde oak cabinetry, centred around a striking quartzite island and a statement pendant light,” Fiona says.
“Guided by our clientsโ bold love for colour, we created a home that marries playful vibrancy with elegant sophistication. Shades of blue thread through the design, adding a dynamic energy that feels both lively and welcoming. At the same time, we ensured the space is as practical as it is beautiful, with a thoughtful layout and carefully chosen finishes that combine durability with timeless style.”

I prefer the before, especially the old style bathroom and the wallpaper/tiles? at top of wall. I think you can update something without having to suck the life out of it.
