Save more than $700 with the NSW Air Conditioning Rebate

By Jen Bishop •

FacebookPinWhatsAppEmailTweet

Keeping cool in summer is a non-negotiable in NSW. However, running that old air conditioner of yours can cost a lot, especially in the long run over several months (not to mention years.

Luckily the NSW Government now offers rebates to help you upgrade to a much better unit—and it’s better in so many ways! The rebate gives you an upfront discount on a system that will last longer, run quieter, and cost you less per month. So, you’ll pay less on the day of installation, and pay even less every month to run the device.

Sound good? Let’s answer some common questions about how the rebate works and what it means for you.

What Is the NSW Air Conditioner Rebate?

This NSW aircon rebate is a government incentive. It helps you replace your old aircon with a new model. You get a substantial discount at purchase, but only if you go through an accredited supplier. That means no waiting to claim money back later, because your supplier (installer) will do everything for you in order for you to claim your rebate (or discount).

By upgrading, you’ll cut your energy use and your power bills. As you can imagine, this adds up over time! A more efficient unit doesn’t need to work as hard, so you’ll notice the difference as soon as you turn it on and start to enjoy that fresh, cool air.

It’s also better for the environment, as less power use means fewer emissions. That’s the whole reason the NSW government is offering the aircon rebate to NSW residents.

In Australia, the cost of installing a new air conditioner can range from around $990 to $3,690. But the rebate can reduce this by $340 to $730, and sometimes even more than that. That’s a big saving, so it’s well worth doing as soon as you can.

Important: Only approved systems and installers are part of the scheme. So you’ll need to check that both the aircon you choose and the installer are accredited. That’s how you ensure eligibility for the rebate.

Who Can Apply for the NSW Air Conditioner Rebate?

The rebate is open to households and small businesses in New South Wales. To qualify, you must be replacing your old system with the new one. It must be a system that meets the NSW government’s standards. You’ll also need to use an approved installer like Efficient Energy Group.

Here’s what else you need to know:

  • Location: You must live or operate in NSW.
  • Permission: You must own the home or business, or have your landlord’s consent.
  • Installer: You must use a Home Energy Efficiency Retrofit (HEER) accredited installer.
  • Contract: You’ll need to sign a contract with an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) before installation.
  • Equipment: The aircon you choose must be on the official GEMS Register of approved models.

The scheme isn’t limited by income, which is great news for all residents in NSW. So, whether you’re a homeowner, renter with consent, or a small business owner, you could qualify to save a ton of cash now and in the future. It’s a straightforward way to save money while also helping cut our energy usage across NSW.

How Do You Apply for the Rebate?

Applying is simple. The rebate is applied at the time of installation. That means less paperwork for you and no waiting to get your money back. Your installer/supplier will do the application for you, and walk you through the parts of the process that you need to be involved in.

Here’re the main steps:

  • Check eligibility: Make sure your home or business is in NSW and that your current system qualifies for replacement.
  • Choose an accredited supplier: Select a company like Efficient Energy Group that’s approved to offer the rebate.
  • Pick your new unit: The supplier will help you choose from the list of approved models.
  • Sign the rebate form: This must be done before installation.
  • Pay the reduced price: The rebate is taken off the upfront cost straight away.

That’s it. The process is designed to be simple and quick, because the NSW rebate is an encouraged step to follow for all residents who want to aim for Australia’s energy targets. Once your new unit is installed, you’ll enjoy cooler air and cheaper bills without delay.

Choosing the Right Air Conditioner

When upgrading, it’s worth thinking about the size and the brand of the unit you choose for your home or business. For example, a 7kW air conditioner can cool a room between 35 and 50 square metres, but this depends on insulation, openings like doorways, and how hot your climate is. Still, this makes it ideal for large bedrooms, open-plan living spaces, or combined dining and lounge areas.

Keep these factors in mind:

  • Insulation: A well-insulated room stays cool more easily. Poor insulation means your aircon has to work harder.
  • Sun exposure: Rooms facing north or west get more sun. They may need more cooling power or extra shading like blinds.
  • Location: Homes in hotter parts of NSW may need stronger systems compared to cooler southern regions.
  • Room layout: Open-plan spaces need more power than enclosed rooms.

For even more control, you can pair your system with Emerald Airlink. This small device connects your aircon to your Wi-Fi, so you can manage it straight from your phone. You’ll be able to adjust settings, set timers, and control your unit remotely without any hassles.

So if your old unit is costing you too much, now’s the time to act before this rebate expires. A new, efficient air conditioner could be more affordable than you think.

I've been meaning to post about getting out of hos I've been meaning to post about getting out of hospital in time for Christmas and spending a magical time with my beautiful family and friends for days now, but I was staying in the moment and off my phone. My wish came true and it really was amazing to enjoy that Santa magic.

Sadly, the day after Boxing Day, I ended up back in an ambulance after an internal bleed where my hemoglobin levels dropped dangerously low. I'm not very good at explaining the medical side, but after surgery and a couple of nights in ICU, I'm now on a ward and recovering well, hoping I get to return home ASAP.

I have so many thank yous to say for the incredible GoFundMe donations and kindness and support I've received. I really am blown away and so grateful. There are so many good people in the world, both strangers and those I'm lucky enough to know.

And having now received 6 bags of blood transfusion myself, another huge shout out to all donors. I felt so good to know I've done my bit donating over the years when I received someone else's life saving donation. Please consider doing the same and potentially saving a life.

Before ending up back in hospital, I was settling in well at home with daily visits from nurses and I'm hoping I can get back to that new normal again soon.

Thank you again to everyone for their kindness. And biggest thanks to @damianfrancis for truly spoiling me at Christmas and once again holding the fort at home. Our boys are so lucky to have you ❤️

Trigger warning: cancer. Home is SO important to Trigger warning: cancer.

Home is SO important to me, I even made a job out of talking about it. And having been stuck in hospital for 5 weeks, away from my sanctuary and my boys, I've never craved it more.

I'm going through the hardest time of my life and I'm finally sharing it here in the way I hope you've always known me to; with authenticity, realness and hope.

I've been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's devastating and life-changing news and feels very vulnerable to share. Sadly it's causing me so much physical pain, I can't manage it at home. Being stuck in hospital, on top of keeping this secret, has been very isolating.

Our precious boys are our number one priority and we are being very well supported by our medical team and amazing friends and family. I can't say enough about the huge role my husband is playing in keeping us together.

I've continued to work when possible because I love it and it's a big part of my identity. I want as much normalcy, distraction and positivity as possible right now. Some days I put my lipstick on and face the day with gratitude for all the good stuff, like my world class friends and amazing healthcare. But I'm only human and other days, I just can't.

Despite the gravity of the situation, I only have to look at my boys to know I cannot give up hope.

Thanks for all the love and support I know you'll throw my way but please respect my boundaries by not asking medical questions or making medical suggestions, and know that I won't be able to reply to everyone.

This beautiful community has supported me for over a decade and I'm sure your kindness will help me no end. And if you want to support me, keep reading the blog so my work isn't wasted!

I'll still be the main point of contact for Interiors Addict but things will look a little different as I continue my chemo (3 rounds down) and get used to my new way of life.

Right now, my only wish is to be discharged to my family for Christmas.

Because I can no longer give blood, if anyone would like to make a festive donation of blood or plasma on my behalf and share it with me here, that would really make my day ❤️

PS. Nurses are worth their weight in gold.
