Breville have unveiled the Eye Q Auto Toaster – a breakthrough in toasting technology that allows users to select their perfect shade of toast by colour, not time.

The patent-protected Eye Q Optic Sensor technology monitors the toast up to 10 times a second, automatically stopping when the chosen colour is reached to ensure perfect results every time.
For more than 100 years, toasters have relied on time-based heating, resulting in inconsistent outcomes and burnt toast frustrations. The Eye Q Auto Toaster represents a transformative leap in the category, establishing a new premium benchmark for precision, performance, and design.

Users simply select their preferred toast shade on the colour selector, place the bread in the slot, and lower the lever. The Eye Q Optic Sensors then monitor the colour change up to 10 times per second using dual wavelength green and infrared LEDs. The toaster automatically stops once the selected shade is reached, delivering consistent results whether toasting white bread, wholegrain, sourdough, crumpets, or fruit loaf.
Recognising that artisanal breads like sourdough require a different approach, Sourdough Mode recalibrates the Eye Q sensors to account for thicker crusts, denser interiors, and longer browning times – delivering even, golden results without burning.
The Eye Q Auto Toaster is packed with premium features designed for a superior toasting experience, including automatic lift and lower functionality for hands-free operation, the ‘A Bit More’ function for an extra touch of browning using sensor precision, and a dedicated Crumpet Mode that toasts one side more than the other for perfect results. For added versatility, Timer Mode allows for manual timing when warming snacks, while neat power cord storage keeps benchtops clean and uncluttered.

The Eye Q Auto Toaster is designed with Breville’s Clearway Cavity ensuring crumbs fall freely into the full-coverage Catch All Crumb Tray. A non-stick ceramic coated top prevents burnt-on debris, reducing the need for scrubbing and keeping the toaster looking pristine.
Doug Nash, Breville’s global product officer, says: “Until now, every toaster no matter the brand or price has relied on timed heating, which is why toast can turn out uneven, inconsistent, or burnt. For over two decades, we’ve been leading the way making toasters ever more effortlessand delightful. The Eye Q Auto Toaster is a breakthrough that fundamentally changes what’s possible in toasting, and we’re thrilled to be bringing it to kitchens all over the world.”

The Eye Q Auto Toaster marks the next chapter in Breville’s long history of innovation in the toast category, building on a legacy of industry-first features introduced over the past two decades. These include the original ‘Lift & Look’ function and LED Progress Bar (2004), motorised controls and the now-iconic ‘A Bit More’ setting (2007), Fruit Bread Mode (2012), Bagel Mode (2014), and the Toast Type Selector (2016). Each advancement, designed to improve the toasting experience, has culminated in the launch of the Eye Q Auto Toaster, cementing Breville’s reputation for reimagining even the simplest kitchen rituals through smart, thoughtful design.
The Eye Q Auto Toaster is available in two models – the 850 Auto 2-Slice ($469) and the 870 Auto 4-Slice ($629) – and five colours: Sea Salt, Brushed Stainless Steel, Noir (launch edition), Pomodoro Rosso, and Black Truffle.
