I absolutely love styling my home for the sake of making it look and feel better. I freely admit it’s my hobby of choice! But I must admit, I really struggle with kitchen styling. It’s a room that needs to be practical, hygienic and clean so I don’t like the idea of too much clutter for clutter’s sake. That said, I always admire how other people manage to have a stylish and lived-in looking kitchen while still keeping it perfectly clean and practical.
Before & after

Over the last couple of years, I think I’ve gone too far in the other direction. In my intense need for clean and tidy benchtops for my mental health (I seriously can’t get on with my day or go to bed without this being the case!), my poor kitchen has been stripped back to nothing more than the bare essentials: kettle, coffee machine, and cannisters is about it! And the other day it struck me as a little sad and clinical for someone whose home is otherwise colourful and full of points of interest!
So, I teamed up with my friends at Kitchenware Collective, Australian distributors of some of the world’s best known and most coveted kitchen brands, to style up a storm, add some colour and life and, best of all, we’re going to give one lucky reader everything I used, worth $4,000, including pieces from Chasseur, Scanpan, Global Knives, Avanti, Nordic Ware and more! Excited? You should be!
Here, you can see what I did (making a point of using things that were actually useful and served a kitchen purpose, as well as being aesthetically pleasing) and I thought I’d include a few top tips:
- While you can use non-kitchen items in your kitchen styling, there are also plenty of things that you’ll actually use which double as decorative. A coloured Chasseur cast iron casserole for example, is really too pretty and too much of an investment piece to keep hidden away, so why not leave it out? I mean, does any other kitchen item scream “I’ve made it” more?! (I’m kidding of course. Well, kind of…)
- A stack of timber boards against your splashback is the best way to add instant warmth, a touch of the organic and the backdrop for other items you’d like to group with them. Try different sizes, shapes and timber tones. You can also add the warmth of timber to your kitchen through bar stools, as I have in mine, and art in timber frames.
- With things you need to keep within easy reach (tea, coffee and sugar, as well as utensils), why not pick some good looking and colourful canisters?
- Pick a colour or two and have some fun with them, either contrasting (as I have with the pink items against my pale sage paneling) or complementing any other hues in your space. I’d stop at three colours though, and use mostly two.
- A water dispenser is a fun way to encourage your kids to drink more water and, even better, get it themselves! Also great when you have a party and want to make a cocktail (or mocktail). And you have to admit, it just looks nice on the bench!
- I think it’s smart to invest in kitchenware and spend a little more on things you’ll use every day. It’s not just the concept of everyday luxuries (which I am indeed a big fan of), but of buying well and buying once. I have things in my kitchen from some of these brands that were from my wedding registry 11 years ago and they still look like new. They’re heritage iconic brands for a reason.
- I always love some flowers, picked herbs, greenery or a plant in the kitchen for a little freshness and life!
- Cool salt & pepper mills have become something of a must-have kitchen decor items these days. You can spend a fortune if you want to, but others are more affordable and just as decorative. Plus, they serve an everyday purpose!
- Adding texture, like the on-trend fluted look of the salt & pepper grinders, the teapot, coffee plunger and glass cups, is an easy way to add interest in the kitchen.
- I can’t go past something sculptural, like the wine decanter, which would look great left out on a shelf. If you have open shelving, which I sadly don’t, you have so much more scope for kitchen styling and creating vignettes. Have fun with it!
- Don’t forget you hang things on the wall too. I think the gold bundt pan looks so gorgeous, like a piece of art! I’ve also dreamed of having a gallery wall of vintage jelly moulds and other pieces, and this might just be my starting point!
The prize, worth a total of $4,000!
