Bree and Ty Craine were brave enough to go for something different in their new master suite and it certainly paid off! Rendering every bedroom, en suite and walk-in wardrobe wall with a textured plaster finish, complete with back-lit display niches behind the bed, was a real DIY challenge. But the results are impressive.
“The idea to go with the Spanish rendered theme throughout the room and ensuite was inspired by our love for Latin American culture,” explained Bree. “We both lived in Central America in our early twenties and we love the architecture and the detailed elements of the classic builds. We wanted to replicate this with our own personal spin, and bring a bit of the unique culture into our home.”
Ty, a builder, completed an extension on their Sunshine Coast home, taking it from two to four bedrooms. And with a little expert help, they were keen to give rendering a go themselves as the finishing touch to their master suite.
“We had our renderer friend Jake Torrisi come over and we had a play with the sort of render and finish we would like. We both loved the natural colour render with an angulated textured finish. It gave the room and bathroom such a unique look as we hand sculpted it exactly the way we wanted,” Bree says.
The couple are thrilled with the end result, particularly the cohesive flow through the bedroom, ensuite and walk-in robe. “It makes for easy, functional living,” says Bree. “We love the seamless render, the high angled skylights in the walk-in robe and bathroom, the balcony which looks out onto thick forest, the niches and the whimsical feel it has to it.”
It wasn’t an easy DIY however! “The feature render world is a deep dive in terms of product style and render. There are so many different products, colours and finishes and it’s not until you have a play with them that you can determine which look you want to create. So once we chose the render, we then focused on the texture we liked.”
The feature wall with the niches was the most challenging. “The niches required a lot of framework inside of the walls and to achieve the depth, a double wall had to be built. The niches are illuminated with a hardwired LED at the base so this was also time-consuming but looks very effective,” Bree says.
Bree and Ty love it so much they now plan to open up the front of their house, which they share with their three young children, and finish the exterior with a similar Spanish rendered look. “Prior to our bedroom, we completed the laundry which has a similar style to our bedroom with a rustic rendered wall. We would like to continue this look throughout the house and create a consistent flow.”
Feedback from friends and family has been satisfyingly positive, leaving the couple very proud of their efforts! “The house backs onto the nature reserve, with nothing to see upstairs apart from forestry. It really is a very unique room which has been designed and built with a lot of hard work and love. My husband is very happy it is complete!”
