Together with Wirriimbi Designs, The Rug Collection has launched JARJUMS (meaning Aboriginal Kids) – a unique youth arts engagement program, targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children across Sydney.
Thirteen children worked closely with Aboriginal artist Chris Edwards and The Rug Collection director Simon Robinson, to create a striking and inspiring collection of exclusive designer rugs based on their family heritage. Sharing the journey with their parents and Elders, the children were given the opportunity to learn about the design process and colour theories, as well as gain an insight into their culture and family history.
“We really wanted to support and facilitate a cultural knowledge exchange through engaging Aboriginal youth, together with Elders, to learn about Aboriginal cultural through storytelling and hands on arts workshops,” said Simon.
The final six designs selected will be manufactured for sale exclusively through The Rug Collection, and will feature the personal story and picture of the young artist on the back.
