Ever wished you could get designer furniture and homewares at high street prices? Well you can, thanks to the Alladin’s Cave of pre-owned pieces which is Home Furniture On Consignment (HFOC).
Consignment is basically a trading arrangement where someone sells goods on behalf of other people and takes a commission. “We handle everything from transport to cleaning and minor repairs,” says HFOC owner Scott Faso, who has a showroom in Sydney’s Alexandria and also sells online, shipping across Australia. His business is now in its tenth years and sells to both the public and the design trade.
“The sort of people who sell with us are often moving locally, interstate or overseas and those who are downsizing, renovating or redecorating. We get many items that are brand new but don’t work in the space as intended or simply don’t fit through the door or in the lift. Our typical customer is a design-savvy person who appreciates excellent quality furniture but doesn’t want to pay the huge price.”
Scott claims to be Sydney’s best kept secret when it comes to buying designer furniture. “Our prices are generally about 50 percent of that of the identical new item, sometimes up to 80 percent less for some ultra high end pieces. For example, you can buy a three year-old Space Furniture dining table for about the same price as you would a new table from Freedom.”
The former accountant runs HFOC with his partner, Charles Hardingham. “I’ve always been interested in furniture and interior design. I love to be able to recycle beautiful pieces of furniture and I’m lucky I can make a living doing it.”
HFOC. 23 Doody Street, Alexandria, NSW 2015.
