Get the look: last night’s Block main bathroom reveals

March 3, 2014

Facebook0Pin00Email0Tweet0

I must admit I didn’t watch The Block room reveals last night as I’m “overseas” in New Zealand for a friend’s wedding. When I got these photos through, there was a clear favourite for me: Kyal and Kara. So I was delighted they not only won, but won with a perfect 30 out of 30 from the judges — the first this season. Well deserved! Here’s why…

Kyal and Kara

Kyal and Kara 3

Those tiles! And that tub! You all know I’m a bath over a shower girl any day so this one won me over. I also loved the added warmth from the timber (and the use of it across part of the ceiling) and thought the basin was perfect and elegant and the styling, just right.

Kyal and Kara 4

I love absolutely everything about this bathroom!

Brad and Dale

I loved the tile choices in this room, and the use of timber. Seems this is becoming a trend this season. The lack of bath was disappointing of course, but the boys revealed they had plans for another bath elsewhere in the house. It sounds like this room got mixed reviews from the judges.

Brad Dale bathroom 1

I loved this useful little storage nook with the mosaic tiles. I really hate those hanging shower caddies so eliminating the need for them is a big win!

Brad and Dale mosaic

Another great basin but I find the assorted towels a bit too much and the large gold Uashama bag a bit random.

Alisa & Lysandra

The twins weren’t happy with their low scores so I’m definitely going to have to watch a rerun when I get back to Australia to what drama went down. Shaynna Blaze called it try-hard, Darren Palmer wasn’t keen on the moss feature and Neale said the room was uncomfortable, with Shaynna adding it was too harsh with too many straight lines and no curves.

Alisa Lysandra 1

I have to say the rectangular bath didn’t appeal to me and I didn’t like the moss either, but I thought a lot of the bathroom looked sleek and expensive.

Chantelle & Steve

The fans weren’t too impressed with their lower than expected judges’ scores this week either, especially as they got some great comments. Neale said their tiles were the most beautiful he’d ever seen on The Block and Darren said the planning was great.

Chantelle steve 3

Neale thought the tub though, was an old-fashioned choice and wasn’t crazy for the black sink.

Chantelle Steve 2

I’m just not quite sure about this room and whether I like it or not. I’ll reserve judgement until I can watch the episode myself.

It's a great time to be an interior designer! Wou It's a great time to be an interior designer!

Would you agree?

The latest @houzzau industry report found that residential design and construction professionals are very optimistic about business prospects. Interior designers and decorators were the most optimistic about revenue growth in 2022 among those surveyed, followed by home builders and building designers.

A third of businesses reported that they were looking to hire more staff this year which is great news for jobseekers.

The only negative finding was around the rising cost of doing business. One of the most significant factors was the price volatility of productsand materials.

All in all though, it's a great time to be in the design industry. If you are, do you agree? Please drop us a comment below๐Ÿ™

Boys' wardrobe makeover for under $500๐Ÿค— Anyone Boys' wardrobe makeover for under $500๐Ÿค—

Anyone else have those basic as built ins in an older house with a hanging rail and nothing else?! Not exactly great use of space or ideal for kids' clothes!

We replaced the doors on all our wardrobes years ago but the internals behind were still pretty lacking. I recently made much better use of space in here with 2 @flexistorage flatpacks from Bunnings. They fit perfectly with easy access and 4 drawers and 3 shelves each is more than enough for kids. We attached them to the inside of the wardrobe so they're safe and sturdy.

They're $209 each and then we cut down a brass wardrobe rail to create 2 hanging rails in between. They can even reach the bottom one themselves. I labelled Seb's too so he knows where to find things quickly.

Before this we were using those hanging shoe racks. The worst!

TA-DAH! SO MUCH BETTER USE OF SPACE!

I thought the judges were super harsh on the girls. There is no way this bathroom is worse than Kara & Kyle’s first effort. I wasn’t a fan of the bath and the greenery but other than that it was still sleek and stylish.

I have recently renovated my own large bathroom and desperately wanted to use timber. I did a lot of research and spoke to all of different industry prossionals. Everyone warned me not to use it because of potential swelling from moisture etc. Are The Block contestants just doing what looks good as they will soon sell and future issues will not be their problem? It grieves me to think I could have used timber in my own bathroom but really wonder if there will be headaches in these bathrooms long term.

The use of wood in bathrooms is definitely possible, you need quality wood such as cedar and seal it well. Left untreated or not maintained if treated it is open to moisture issues.

I thought Shaynna was especially harsh and rude about the twins bathroom and felt it definitely deserved a higher score. Shaynna would do well to have a lesson in etiquette. Chantelle & Steve’s bathroom was a very confusing mix and seemed to lack a direction.

    Loved Kyle & Kara’s Bathroom!!!!
I am sure given how particular Keith has been he would ensure they are meeting industry standards and the timber would be treated or coated to prevent swelling etc.
There are bathrooms with timber floors around and due to advancement in technology the issues with timber over the years is more preventable now.
As for the twins the judges were spot especially given it is so not functional.
There isn’t one bit of storage either not to mention Shaynna’s comment of where to rest your hairdryer etc.
After all they are seasoned professionals after being dubbed the Bathroom Queens so the expectation from the judges is naturally higher…and really the girls should no better.
I certainly think there focus is more on the wow!
As for Steve and Chantelle….wow I have never seen more elements in one room!
It actually looks more like a renovation where they have had to work with an existing layout given how busy and the lack of flow it provides.
The boys….well just a couple of minor styling issues I thought and as to whether a bath install would have been a good idea remains to be seen as I think they would have had the same issue almost as the twins unless they also chose a similar shaped bath to Kyle and Kara which would not have made it there own.
Here’s to more thrill and suspense as to what lays ahead!!

  7. AvatarTammy-Lee says

My apologies…..in regards to no storage in twins bathroom there is an inbuilt shave cabinet but not exactly the only storage you want in your main bathroom!!!!

I disagree with scoring the K’s 100%. It’s not a functional bathroom when there is such limited space between the vanity and the bath. Let’s say that’s a 600mm tile?? How is that ample space to step back and open the drawers/cupboard?
