Luke Tohmeh and his team at Sydney-based Luke’s Renovations have renovated more than 3000 bathrooms. Today, he shares the four most common mistakes he comes across as well as five top tips to help you get it right.
Common mistakes
Buying no brand/cheap products. Most of the time these donโt last and the plumbing call-out fee to repair them costs more than the whole product.
Hiring the cheapest tradesmen. Most of the time they end up doing more damage than good. Do thorough research online and you will know who is legit and who isnโt. Check the lengh of time they have been building reviews. The longer a business has maintained positive reviews, the more you can trust them.
Buying excessive accessories and cluttering the bathroom. Some bathrooms we complete look really good until the client installs countless accessories all over them that completely ruin the look and feel!
Accessory placement. Always try to keep things out of the way. Many clients ask us to install shelves which can bump into their shoulders, toilet roll holders out of reach, towel rails on the other side of the bathroom and many more bad ideas we try to talk them out of! Itโs always best to plan beforehand or wait until all the main fittings are in to evaluate properly.
Top tips to get your bathroom right
If you want an easy to maintain bathroom, stick to large format tiles with minimal grout lines!
Stay away from natural stone tiles unless youre prepared to maintain them; sealing every year, using different cleaning methods etc.
If you hire a company, it’s best if you can avoid micro-managing! Let them do what they’re best at.
Make sure quotations are clear from the get-go and donโt be fooled by extremely cheap quotes!
Shower step downs are a must with frameless shower screens or open showers. Make sure the tiler incorporates a 5-to-10mm drop down. This will create a barrier to prevent water escaping.
Luke’s Renovations offer a fully managed service where they oversee the design, planning, manufacture and installation of your entire bathroom or kitchen, with most bathrooms completed within two weeks.
