Almost a third of young people are social networking from the bathroom

I was surprised too! I thought it was just me that once (okay, twice!) dropped a BlackBerry in the bath (true story). Reece has opened entries for its Bathroom Innovation Award (BIA), bringing technology to the forefront with a revamped concept this year, exploring Tomorrow’s Bathroom Today.

Last year's winning design by Gavin Harris

Last year’s winning design by Gavin Harris

For 2013, we’re bringing the future of bathrooms closer by asking designers to explore the role of technology in the bathroom,’ says Reece CEO, Peter Wilson. “Technology now plays a key role in the home. We believe exploring the potential of technology in the bathroom offers a unique platform for designers to create something truly innovative in a space that has not yet fully realised that potential.” [Read more...]

The coffee table that doubles as a dolls house

Qubis Haus is a dual purpose coffee table/dolls house. Could this solve the problem of clearing toys OFF the coffee table because they’re already IN it?!

QUBIS HAUS

The coffee table transforms into a dolls house with the simple addition of sliding panels made from wood and perspex, enabling the ‘designer’ to create different room layouts. Designer Amy Whitworth says: “The table is made in solid birch plywood and has clean modern lines, making it a beautiful piece of living room furniture as well as a centre for children to play. The table can live permanently in the living room so the children can play with it whenever they want.

They don’t have to put it away and you don’t have to put up with it when grown ups want the room again, just slide out the walls. And once the children have grown up it remains a modern table with happy memories, if they/you do ever stop playing with it!” [Read more...]

Design a sustainable pop-up shop & win $3,000

The Big Shift Design Competition is an exciting new concept developed to encourage creativity and innovation in the design of functional interiors using sustainable materials and products. And you could win $3,000 cash!

In 2013 the competition will focus on sustainability in retail design and the emergence of the ‘Pop Up’ shop phenomenon. Using Xanita X-Board materials (lightweight boards made from upcycled, post-consumer cellulose fibre waste) professional designers are asked to apply their creativity to two categories:

  • The Lend Lease Pop Up Kiosk – using X-Board to create a design for multiple types of services and merchandise within a 4m long x 3m wide footprint. The design must be easily dismantled and reassembled, be easily adaptable and display brand effectively.

1st Prize $2000 – 2nd Prize $1000

  • Pop Up Shop – using X-Board to create a design for multiple types of services and merchandise within a 8m wide x 10m long footprint. The design must be easily dismantled and reassembled, be easily adaptable and display brand effectively.

1st Prize $3000 – 2nd Prize $1000

The 1st and 2nd prize-winning entries will be built by Oxford Communications Group Pty Ltd and displayed during designEx in Melbourne in May. There will also be an opportunity for winners to pitch their designs to Lend Lease for possible use in their 16 retail centres around Australia.

Indesign launches The Collection Online (TCO)

Just launched, The Collection Online (TCO) is a searchable resource for specifiers, as well as an invaluable resource for consumers, that the folks at Indesign have been busy designing and building over the past two years.

“We will continue to curate and edit the content to ensure it’s consistently bringing the architecture and design community the best of the best,” says online and media executive Nikita Sheth. “It’s conceived for those seeking a comprehensive directory of companies and brands commonly used by design industry professionals.”

Have you checked it out yet?

Daylight saving calls for classic clocks, right?

Any excuse, right?

Is it just me or do men just LOVE clocks (and modular lounges and huge flat screens)? Whenever I drag my fiance into a homewares store (and, as you can imagine, that’s pretty often) he usually finds a HUGE clock and says we should buy it. But he never knows where we’d put said MASSIVE timepiece and it never gets bought.

These classic Arne Jacobsen clocks would look great in most spaces, don’t you think?

Gavin Harris, a senior associate at futurespace, was awarded the Professional Prize of $20,000, with his Japanese inspired freestanding bath unit, Shiro. The judging panel applauded Harris’ clever incorporation of a basin and bath as one, use of a singular plumbing system, its freestanding qualities and suitability for stylish, modern homes and hotels.
