Last night’s room reveal and where to buy what you saw on The Block

Sunday night room reveals are the best bit about the The Block. No challenges, just renovating, room reveals, judging and results. Hoorah! The long and drawn out scoring process aside, what’s not to like?

Last night’s was a great episode, with Matt and Kim’s Pollock-inspired bedroom described as both “a crime scene” and the most controversial room in the show’s history. Kudos to them for getting such a reaction! I thought their design was wholly inappropriate but admired their bravery and they definitely executed their ideas really well and with enthusiasm. Easy for me to say as an armchair critic…

Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker loving the timber tiles in Johnno and Trixie’s bedroom

I think Bec and George were probably the right couple to win, although I loved parts of Trixie and Johnno’s room too, in particular their Bonnie and Neil wall tiles. I can’t believe none of the judges had seen them before; I’ve been loving them for months and wishing I wasn’t renting so I could use them somewhere! I like the twins but I wasn’t a fan of last night’s bedroom. Next week will be interesting with two bathrooms each to complete. I do love a good bathroom reno so looking forward to those! First look: New canvas designs from Urban Road

I’m a big fan of Urban Road. I have a couple of their canvases in my home and they always get comments. They’re releasing a new collection tomorrow but I have a first look at the designs for you. These lovely smudgy ikats, called Sienna and Spectrum, are my favourites.

What’s not to love about rattan furniture?

Rattan furniture is having a serious revival, don’t you think? Everywhere I look, I’m seeing peacock chairs and bedheads, brought bang up to date with the latest paint colours. I also love old school, untreated rattan paired with wonderful contrasting textiles on cushions and linen.

Chippendale 3 fold screen

The patterns in pieces like this screen also work well with the trend for geometrics. If you have the patience and a creative streak, you can pick up some secondhand gems at op shops or on eBay and give them a new lease of life by painting them yourself.

If, like me, you’re a bit useless like that, you can buy it in just about every colour under the sun. All of the furniture pictured is by Lincoln Brooks, used by many of the country’s top interior designers but also available to retail customers through stores like EcoChic and Naturally Cane. It’s lightweight, affordable, eco-friendly, made from natural materials and can work both indoor and out. Plus, it’s easily given a new look with new upholstery should you move house or change your colour scheme, for example. So versatile! [Read more...]

WIN Kirstie’s Vintage Home DVD and book set

I’m a huge fan of Kirstie and Phil’s Location, Location (I grew up on the stuff in the UK, where it was HUGE), so I was keen to check out Kirstie Allsopp’s latest show, Kirstie’s Vintage Home.

Kirstie's_Vintage_Home_DVD

Following on from the success of Kirstie’s Handmade Showdown, the queen of craft (and real estate) takes on hopeless homemakers and turns them into handmade heroes. She shows them how, with a little bit of vintage inspiration, their own fair hands and that little bit of extra homemade magic, they can transform their houses from shabby to chic. In today’s disposable culture of cheap furniture and trying to keep up with the latest trends, it’s a really nice message. And I think the idea of mixing vintage finds with newer pieces in your home, as well as getting back to basics with old-fashioned crafts, is alive and kicking in Australia. [Read more...]

Husband and wife collaborate on Pep & Me art

Looking to brighten a dull space with a pretty print? Check out Pep & Me, a new online store showcasing an original collection of limited edition illustrations and prints by husband and wife graphic designers.

Pep&Me_framed

Pep & Me are the nicknames of co-founders Joe Puntoriero and Melanie Miles. “Pep is a nickname given to Joe from his first design role. Me is short for Mel,” Melanie explains. She says the name plays on the fun, quirky side of the brand, giving it a bit of character.

Pep&Me Closeup

Originally creating pieces to act as inspiration for other projects she was working on, it was comments from friends and family on the artwork around the house that encouraged Melanie to take the next step. So she created an original set of illustrations and prints and opened an online store. [Read more...]

Come and meet me and get a glam makeover with De’Longhi’s Icona Vintage

So what are you doing next weekend? Would you like to come and meet me, get a glam makeover, have your photo taken and be in with the chance of winning a set of gorgeous new appliances for your kitchen? Sound good?

Icona Vintage 1

You may have noticed I love lipstick and am never without a full face of makeup (I may or may not have friends who call me ‘doll face’). Some might say I’m from the more is more  school of cosmetics! So when De’Longhi asked if I’d like to team up with them on a fun event where I’d get to meet my readers and they’d get makeovers, I couldn’t say no. On top of that, they’re launching their new Icona Vintage range in the most gorgeous colours and I genuinely love them. Who knew kitchen appliances could be that good looking, I ask you?
