The Block kitchen reveals last night

By Jen Bishop •

FacebookPinWhatsAppEmailTweet

Last night was the most impressive room reveal so far if you ask me. What did you think of the couples’ kitchens? If you liked what you saw, read on to find out which products and finishes the contestants chose from Freedom Kitchens, so you can shop the look yourselves. I don’t think the photos do them justice as much as seeing them on the TV. You can watch videos on The Block website.

Trixie and Johnno’s winning kitchen

Seems the viewing public weren’t happy with the choice of winner, with some serious bitching and calls of a fix on The Block’s Facebook page (it can get pretty vicious over there!) last night. Trixie upset many viewers by saying she’d like to dress the twins up as pigs (on account of them police officers) which many said was disrespectful.

Trixie & Johnno

Trixie and Johnno featured Newbury Satin Heartwood Laminex, Alaskan Gloss Crème Brulee and Caesarstone Frosty Carrina with 40mm edge.

Judges’ verdict? Designed exactly for the way people live their lives, perfect for the penthouse!

Jen’s verdict: I thought it was safe and neutral in a classy way, but not very exciting. I’m a bit over vertical gardens too. LOVED the lights though.

Alisa and Lysandra’s kitchen

Alisa & Lysandra

Alisa and Lysandra featured Alaskan Gloss White and Caesarstone Frosty Carrina.

Judge’s verdict? White with a contemporary twist. Simply stunning!

Jen’s verdict: The twins are seriously impressing me. Their polished concrete benchtop was gorgeous and the timber light fitting, bar stools (divine) and floor added warmth. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be this one, but I loved elements of all the kitchens.

Madi and Jarrod’s kitchen

Madi and Jarrod's kitchen

Madi and Jarrod featured Alaskan Gloss in Royal Oyster, Baye Riven from the Impressions range and Caesarstone London Grey with 40mm edge.

Judges’ verdict? This kitchen has a human connection and buyers will fall in love with it.

Jen’s verdict: The laundry was a brilliant, practical addition. Trying to dry clothes in an apartment can be a nightmare! Loved the sleek lines, lighting and artwork in this kitchen.

Bec and George’s kitchen

Bec & George

Bec and George featured Alaskan Gloss Silver Metallic, Alaskan Gloss Royal Oyster and Caesarstone Frosty Carrina.

Judges’ verdict? This is the ultimate feel good, entertainers’ kitchen.

Jen’s verdict: I loved the lighting, the vintage Orangina poster and the mirrored splashback and range hood (although I wouldn’t want to clean them!). This feels like a young and colourful kitchen with a nice vibe. The bar was a cool concept but wasn’t keen on the glass shelves or the word ‘bar’ spelled out on the wall.

Kim and Matt’s kitchen

Kim & Matt

Kim & Matt featured Alaskan Gloss Pearl Metallic, Aluminium frame perspex doors, Caesarstone Jet Black and Caesarstone Snow with 40mm edge.

Judges’ verdict? Design centric buyers will pay top dollar for this kitchen.

Jen’s verdict: I loved the timber light (buy it here) and the pops of hot pink, especially the artwork on that stunning textured wall. It’s nice to use art and decorative items in unexpected places. I also love the contrast of the glossy white kitchen with the rough feature wall. Probably my second favourite kitchen.

I've been meaning to post about getting out of hos I've been meaning to post about getting out of hospital in time for Christmas and spending a magical time with my beautiful family and friends for days now, but I was staying in the moment and off my phone. My wish came true and it really was amazing to enjoy that Santa magic.

Sadly, the day after Boxing Day, I ended up back in an ambulance after an internal bleed where my hemoglobin levels dropped dangerously low. I'm not very good at explaining the medical side, but after surgery and a couple of nights in ICU, I'm now on a ward and recovering well, hoping I get to return home ASAP.

I have so many thank yous to say for the incredible GoFundMe donations and kindness and support I've received. I really am blown away and so grateful. There are so many good people in the world, both strangers and those I'm lucky enough to know.

And having now received 6 bags of blood transfusion myself, another huge shout out to all donors. I felt so good to know I've done my bit donating over the years when I received someone else's life saving donation. Please consider doing the same and potentially saving a life.

Before ending up back in hospital, I was settling in well at home with daily visits from nurses and I'm hoping I can get back to that new normal again soon.

Thank you again to everyone for their kindness. And biggest thanks to @damianfrancis for truly spoiling me at Christmas and once again holding the fort at home. Our boys are so lucky to have you ❤️

Trigger warning: cancer. Home is SO important to Trigger warning: cancer.

Home is SO important to me, I even made a job out of talking about it. And having been stuck in hospital for 5 weeks, away from my sanctuary and my boys, I've never craved it more.

I'm going through the hardest time of my life and I'm finally sharing it here in the way I hope you've always known me to; with authenticity, realness and hope.

I've been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's devastating and life-changing news and feels very vulnerable to share. Sadly it's causing me so much physical pain, I can't manage it at home. Being stuck in hospital, on top of keeping this secret, has been very isolating.

Our precious boys are our number one priority and we are being very well supported by our medical team and amazing friends and family. I can't say enough about the huge role my husband is playing in keeping us together.

I've continued to work when possible because I love it and it's a big part of my identity. I want as much normalcy, distraction and positivity as possible right now. Some days I put my lipstick on and face the day with gratitude for all the good stuff, like my world class friends and amazing healthcare. But I'm only human and other days, I just can't.

Despite the gravity of the situation, I only have to look at my boys to know I cannot give up hope.

Thanks for all the love and support I know you'll throw my way but please respect my boundaries by not asking medical questions or making medical suggestions, and know that I won't be able to reply to everyone.

This beautiful community has supported me for over a decade and I'm sure your kindness will help me no end. And if you want to support me, keep reading the blog so my work isn't wasted!

I'll still be the main point of contact for Interiors Addict but things will look a little different as I continue my chemo (3 rounds down) and get used to my new way of life.

Right now, my only wish is to be discharged to my family for Christmas.

Because I can no longer give blood, if anyone would like to make a festive donation of blood or plasma on my behalf and share it with me here, that would really make my day ❤️

PS. Nurses are worth their weight in gold.

Hi Jen, liked the kitchens, but didn’t love them! I wish they had have taken more chances and stayed away from mainly white. I know white is a selling point, but if I was using someone else’s money I would want to let my hair down and do something that would stand out about all else! I love the finish on Kim and Matt’s and they tried to do something different with the floor. I liked the twins rooms also, all the appliances were great. I liked the laminex that Trixie and Jonno bought in, and loved Madi and Jarrod’s range hoods. I did like Bec and George’s pops of colour but though their ktichen looked really small for some reason. I guess they all look a lot different in person. But they didn’t knock my socks off!

I agree with Leanne. I find the rooms very uninspiring. Different versions of the same basic model really. Change of flooring, splashbacks and benchtops but same, same for me. No thinking outside the box. Appreciate they can’t be too crazy but where is the element of creativity and design in this show. Same format, same result every year. No longer a Block fan as the show/contestants don’t seem to have evolved from the initial few years. I don’t bother with most of the magazines and books on offer in the design and interior market either these days. Homes have become bland, show pieces for the masses. All in my opinion, of course :))

I loved Madi and Jarrod’s Kitchen it was my immediate favourite it just feels good! (i think it’s the warm and calming colour palatte.) I was’nt a huge fan of Matt and Kim’s kitchen when i saw it on the show last night but with the angle of this photograph hiding the sillouete cabnient they put in, it’s actually become my new favourtie! Thanks for the post Jen! I’m officially block addicted.

I could have sworn Matt and Kim’s kitchen floor was gloss white?! What is that flooring in the photo?

    • Jen BishopJen Bishop says

      June 17, 2013 at 4:51 pm

It was white, Elise. I assume they changed it later in the competition. They often make changes between room reveal and the end when they auction off (perhaps they decided white was impractical). These pictures came from Freedom Kitchens. Hope that clears that up! Jen

I know that when I see things in real life as opposed to online or in magazines they can be surprisingly so different….that’s why I trust the judges when they make their final decisions re the winners. I noticed a few changes with chairs/ stools in units 4 & 5 too…..not sure why Jarrod and Madi changed their beautiful stools…..I suspect budget issues resulted in going from designer ones to the freedom stools.
