Sallie Burgess’ stylish and serene green laundry looks like it cost a lot more than it did! Cleverly using the Practa and Flatpax ranges from Bunnings and customising them with green paint and some well chosen accessories, her and husband Ben created something really beautiful for a touch over $1,000.

The part-time dental assistant has been juggling work with owner-building her dream home, two hours north-west of Brisbane. Being that the entire house was a steel kit home from Mecano, it seems fitting this room has a flatpack base!
“I love fashioning warm and inviting spaces and being able to get creative and challenge myself around budgets and DIYs,” says Sallie, who lives on a a small five-acre hobby farm with Ben, their two dogs, her childhood pony and two miniature goats.
“We started our home build in March 2024. Our home came in a steel kit form from Mecano, which was basically flat packed. We assembled then stood the frames and completed the build under an Owner Builders Permit. We have owned the block since August 2023 and have been in the house a little over a month.”
The Practa and Flatpax ranges from Bunnings come in the standard white melamine doors and cabinetry. “We decided to change it up and give it a more fresh and custom look by painting the new cabinetry in a sage green (created in the Taubmanโs Coloursmith app, taking inspiration from a Pinterest photo) with the White Knight tile and laminate primer and White Knight tile and laminate satin top coat. The biggest bargain in the laundry was the floor tiles; a polished stone tile I got at a Grayโs Online auction for $5.70 per m2.”
Sallie loves walking into the laundry and the way the natural light reflects off the white splashback tiles. “The space feels fresh, clean and inviting. My favourite aspect is the space created for the laundry hampers by removing the two bottom drawers on the Practa Kitchen Pantry Cabinet. It made for easy access to the washer/dryer being at the same level and also created more storage and a clean bench space.”
The total fitout cost $1,075, not including plumbing, electrical, paint or plaster, as those costs were shared across the house.
