Urban Rustic, a new homewares store finding joy in pre-loved wares

September 6, 2013

FacebookPinEmailTweet

There’s a new shop on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and it’s absolutely full of lovely, mainly vintage, homewares and props!

urban rustic 1

Urban Rustic opened in Newport a month ago and is proving a hit. With so many other gorgeous homewares and furniture shops in the surrounding area, it adds to what is already a great destination for interiors addicts.

The woman behind this little treasure trove is Sandy Cash, a former designer, art director and stylist with a love of all things secondhand. Her last full-time job before having children was was at the LifeStyle Channel, where she created digital animation and design for on air, and also shot promos, opening title sequences and station branding. โ€œQuite often I was the creative, producer, stylist, art director, props, designer and compositer. I got to put my finger in a lot of pies. Yummy pies.โ€

urban rustic 5

Over the years, as a hobby, she’s been collecting eclectic vintage and secondhand pieces and she jokes it was fear of divorce which led her to open the shop and sell some of it! โ€œI was taking over my husband’s shed! Seriously though, it’s something I have wanted to do for a few years, because I love design and styling and decorating. Oh, and let’s not forget shopping!โ€

urban rustic 6

She already had an online shop, but deep down she wanted to get all her lovely pieces out together on shelves, and don’t they look great? โ€œI have been stalking this little space for about a year now hoping it would become vacant again, and it finally did! I am the store I wanted to see here, I guess. I love the Northern Beaches but I always felt it was lacking on the eclectic vintage side.โ€ Sandy’s happy to be offering something new in that she’s offering the not new, although she does stock some new pieces by local designers and makers too.

โ€œI have a lot of vintage Pyrex (although its selling quickly), Mid Century art glass, industrial rustic furniture pieces, small gift items and quirky kids toys. I have my eye on a few other not-new pieces down the track but I’m pretty happy with my stock for now,โ€ she says. โ€œThere’s also a cool shop in a nearby arcade doing vintage clothing so I’m hoping Newport becomes a bit of a destination for people wanting something out of the box that doesn’t have a box, if you know what I mean. Robertson Road is a cool little strip with gorgeous things next door in the Family Jewels and excellent coffee from Flamingos & Dingos among others. Such great people. I’m so happy to become part of this cool little street.โ€

Sandy Cash

Reusing and recycling is clearly a huge part of Sandy’s philosophy. โ€œDon’t get me wrong, I have newness in my house, but I do love finding authentic, unique pieces of amazing quality, that other people have ditched for something new. I try not to be too expensive, as I want to change people’s mindset. I worry many people are hung up on barcodes and brand new. The quality of my stuff is amazing, and made in the country of origin. They are heirloom pieces without being ridiculously expensive.โ€

All Sandy’s finds are available to hire as props too. โ€œTheyย can be featured in photo shoots, TV commercials, films, house styling, food styling, magazines. I have a lot of pieces in storage still, period items, quirky props I can’t bring myself to sell yet, utensils, kitchen basics, Skippy mugs, toys, books, Thonet chairs, Designers Guild bed linen, Cath Kidston spotty bunting, and so it goes on.โ€

urban rustic 3

Locals have welcomed the new addition. โ€œPeople seem to like how colourful and bright it is. I have a lot of people come in and get nostalgic, wistful about certain things they had in their family homes. It’s a happy place I hope. I hear so many great stories. One girl bought an orange Pyrex dish identical to one given to her by her late mother. She was so thrilled because now she had one to use every day without fear of it being broken. I love that. My flamingos out the front are a talking point too. I am surprised at how open most people are to pre-loved items. I thought I might appeal only to vintage lovers but it’s not the case, people recognise and appreciate the quality and design. Which really is what I am all about. Good design is timeless.โ€

Urban Rustic, 6b Robertson Road, Newport, NSW 2106.

Owner @clarehillier__ says: "With its purple, pink, red and brown tones, the slate was the starting point for our interior palette."

Hello friends! Just thought I'd say hi. Two weeks Hello friends! Just thought I'd say hi. Two weeks since leaving hospital and I'm doing much better than I expected to be at this early stage. A long recovery road ahead but making progress in how much I can move my arm and although I drag myself through some days non-stop yawning, others I can go for a little walk or out for lunch before collapsing on the couch! I can now tie my own hair back and put on a real bra which is very exciting ๐Ÿคฃ Having my bestie here to help us with the boys, drive me places and just be brilliant positive company is the best thing I could have asked for not to mention the many Dinner Ladies vouchers from friends! Thanks for all your kind messages, cards, flowers, gifts and offers of help โค๏ธ
I definitely feel like a statistic now but hoping I definitely feel like a statistic now but hoping to raise some awareness off the back of my misfortune (and also very lucky escape).

@newsouthwaleshealth have just put out this warning about a rise in serious bacterial infections. iGAS (invasive group A streptococcus) is what caused my necrotising fasciitis and sepsis.

Apparently there's similar happening in VIC too.

It's extremely rare but very serious nonetheless so please have a read and be aware of symptoms. I've linked to the article from a button via my link in bio.

Promise this is the last wretched hospital photo I Promise this is the last wretched hospital photo I'll post and I hope to be home and with my lippie back on by Monday. You know it's serious when I'm lipstick free, right?!

This was about a week ago in intensive care. And although my arm is still bloody sore I'm now on a normal ward and no longer attached to any drips, drains or a catheter. I've come a long way.

This has been the most physical and mental challenge of my life but I'm through the worst. I kept my arm. The doctors saved my life.

I cannot say it enough times. If you're worried about your health, don't hang around. Things can change so quickly.

A huge thanks to my amazing husband @damianfrancis We've had the hardest year yet and our marriage has never been stronger, even if my rings did get cut off my finger in hospital ๐Ÿ˜œ

As great of a job as he is doing at home with the kids, I cannot wait to get home now. Countdown is on to a new year and a fresh start.

And I can't say enough just how overwhelmingly grateful I am to all the medical professionals involved in my care, from the @healthdirectaus nurse who sent me to Emergency to the exceptional surgeons, doctors, nurses and support staff.

Happy New Year, everyone. Remember you never know what's around the corner and this is not a dress rehearsal!

And huge thank you for all your kindness here. Has been amazing while stuck in bed.

Xxx

For those who missed it, I was unlucky enough to get necrotising fasciitis. You'll have to Google it.
The unluckiest girl or the luckiest? Day 6 in int The unluckiest girl or the luckiest?

Day 6 in intensive care after suddenly coming down with a very serious necrotising fasciitis in my elbow on Sunday. Four operations later (with more to come) I'm out of the woods, alive and have my arm. But I won't be going home until after Christmas. Also picked up a bonus bit of pneumonia to keep things interesting.

I won't lie. This has been super super hard but I feel extremely lucky nonetheless. Have come across some exceptional surgeons, anaesthetists, doctors and nurses who have been incredibly kind at my most vulnerable as well as great at their jobs. I'm really grateful. Huge thank you to my amazing husband who is holding down the fort with the help and cooking of our wonderful friends. And to friends who check in, send love, flowers, snacks and sushi, I will never forget it.

Of course I will be sad tomorrow but my boys can visit and we will have another Christmas next month.

I'll leave you with this. Never ever ignore those health niggles. @healthdirectaus is always a great starting point.

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and will enjoy everyone else's celebrations on here with only a hint of bitterness ๐Ÿ˜‰

PS. Does this win the most unflattering photo of me ever published? I think so! No lippy for a WEEK.

I love Newport its a wonderful part of the northern beaches, really vibrant and fun shop! next Sunday drive we are going back up to visit that end of town. Being a Northern Beaches local there are lots of fabulous places and new jewels to discover. It would be great if you did a series and worked your way back down to Manly. Come and visit us at Sia & me in Balgowlah along the way, we specialise in handcrafted furniture made locally by my partner Sia and crafted with lots of love.

Ashlin, congratulations. What a great idea. I hope you got photos! That must have looked spectacular. Wow. You got totally flamingoed. Which is a thing in the States, where you wake up and someone has put a whole flock on your lawn overnight. The best vandalism you could ever hope to see… Anyway, if you are in the market for more I sell them online here http://urbanrustic.com.au/?wpsc-product=pink-flamingos Cheers Sandy, urban rustic
