Top tips for choosing the right flooring

By Jen Bishop •

FacebookPinWhatsAppEmailTweet

When embarking on a new build or renovation, one of the most crucial elements to consider is your flooring and wall design. These foundational aspects not only set the tone for the aesthetic appeal of your home but also play a significant role in functionality and comfort. With so many options available, it’s essential to plan your flooring and wall choices carefully to ensure they align with your style, lifestyle, and the overall design of your home. Design expert Sarah Jobse from Oak & Orange shares her expertise on how to navigate the planning process.

Sarah Jobse and Heather Gampe of Oak & Orange

When planning your flooring and wall design, it’s crucial to consider how each element will work together to create a cohesive and visually appealing space. “Flooring and walls are the foundation of any great interior design. It’s essential to select styles and colours that not only complement your home’s overall aesthetic but also suit your daily lifestyle. The right choices can make a dramatic difference in both the look and feel of your space.”

With so many options available, the challenge for those renovating or building can often be visualising what the combination of chosen building materials will look like. An innovative tool available to homeowners is the online Home Visualiser from flooring supplier Andersens. It allows you to virtually try out different flooring and wall options in your own home. By uploading photos of your space or using preloaded room images, you can see how different styles and colours will look, helping you make more informed decisions. The Home Visualiser can save you time and give you confidence in your choices before making a commitment.

Choose flooring to suit your design style

“Different styles of flooring set the tone for your home,” says Sarah. “For instance, modern Australian style, characterised by clean lines and open spaces, benefits from polished concrete, wide plank timber, or sleek tiles. Mid Century modern style, with its emphasis on organic shapes and functionality, pairs beautifully with natural finish wood flooring or retro-style vinyl. Coastal styles, inspired by the beach, are enhanced by light timber, whitewashed finishes, or pale tiles. Hamptons style, known for its elegance, often features wide plank timber flooring or classic oak, combining light colours and natural materials.”

Co-ordinating flooring and wall colours is key

“When it comes to creating a cohesive and visually appealing space, coordinating your flooring and wall colours is key,” says Sarah. Choosing light flooring paired with light walls creates a sense of space and brightness, making rooms appear larger and more open, and is the perfect combination for small rooms or homes with limited natural light. Just like flooring, light wall colours can make a space feel larger and brighter. They create a fresh, airy atmosphere and can serve as a blank canvas for bold furniture or art.

On the other hand, light flooring with dark walls can add depth and contrast, making the space feel dynamic and visually interesting. This approach is particularly effective for creating focal points or accentuating specific areas within a room. Dark walls can add a dramatic, sophisticated touch to your interiors, and in particular, an accent wall using a bold or contrasting colour on one wall is great for highlighting architectural features or creating a focal point.

For those with dark flooring, pairing it with light walls creates a balanced look, making the room feel spacious and less confined. This combination works well in larger rooms, helping to maintain a sense of openness. If you prefer an intimate and cosy environment, dark flooring with dark walls can achieve this beautifully. This pairing is ideal for creating a sophisticated and warm ambiance, perfect for a media room or bedroom where comfort and intimacy are desired. Neutral flooring provides a versatile foundation, allowing you to experiment with bold wall colours or patterns without overwhelming the room. allowing for personality and flair while maintaining a cohesive look.

Lastly, pairing neutral flooring with neutral walls offers a timeless and versatile aesthetic. This combination of tones like beige, grey, and taupe can blend seamlessly with various décor styles, allowing for easy updates to furniture and decor as trends and personal tastes evolve.

Adding texture to walls creates interest

Walls play an equally important role in defining the character of your home. Adding texture through plaster, or wallpaper enhances visual interest, while natural materials like wood panelling, stone, or exposed brick bring warmth and character. Modern wallpapers, with their array of patterns and textures, offer a versatile way to add personality and style to your walls.

Tips for planning your flooring and wall design

1.     Define your style and colour preferences

2.     Assess your lifestyle and the function of each room

3.     Consider the durability and maintenance needs of different materials

4.     Use online tools to explore your options and visualise them

5.     Set a realistic budget and stick to it

6.     Request and review samples

7.     Plan for installation and additional costs

“By carefully coordinating your flooring and wall choices, considering the interplay of colours, textures, and materials, you can create a harmonious and inviting home that not only looks stunning but also feels comfortable and welcoming. Visual design tools give you the confidence to make the right choices,” says Sarah.

Building new isn't the only way to get a climate f Building new isn't the only way to get a climate friendly home. CSIRO research indicates that over half of the houses Australians will live in by 2050 already exist today. And those homes — from our 1950s weatherboards to mid-century gems — offer one of the most exciting opportunities to slash emissions, cut energy bills, and reimagine home design for a low-carbon future.

Welcome to the rise of retrofit culture: a movement that’s proving you don’t need to knock down to level up.

We're having this discussion on the blog today and sharing examples of two older homes given new, more sustainable, leases on life.

Head over via link in bio and stories.
