Drawing inspiration from the serenity and beauty of desert landscapes, the new neutrals for 2025 create a palette of soft sand, velvety ochres and deep terracottas. These hues are meant for layering, as wall colours, furnishings and décor.
Paint brand Wattyl say that these neutrals create a message of warmth; almost a direct response to our craving for sanctuary in a chaotic world. And whilst we are definitely leaving quiet, beige neutrals in the past, these new colours are just as versatile in terms of the other colours, textures and patterns they can work with.
There are so many ways to be playful with this new colour trend. Above, the orange desert shade is matched with the reddish table and pink and green decorations.
If you were to paint a space in one or more of these desert hues, consider using a double drenching method – where all surfaces (walls, ceilings, trims and doors) are painted in the same colour. This technique maximises the space, especially with smaller rooms. In bedrooms, it creates a calming ambience.
In the room above, shades of pink and purple are instead used to complement the deep terracotta wall colour. Though the colours are intense on their own, they have a striking effect when combined.
