Nestled in the beachside Sydney suburb of Cronulla “The Maybe Forever” project is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design and a familycentered approach, designed by the much-loved SOUL Home founder, Simone Mathews.
After five years of dedication and meticulous planning, this stunning home embodies the perfect blend of classic elegance and resort-inspired charm, creating a space that feels like a perpetual holiday for its inhabitants.
A new beginning
The journey began with the purchase of a large block with an outdated property from a couple who had cherished their home, filled with memories of family gatherings and childhood adventures. While the house was steeped in love, it did not meet the functionality or design aspirations of its new owners. The original layout was less than ideal, with a main level that felt too exposed to the street and a convoluted flow that led to a steep staircase down to the laundry and yardโa space affectionately dubbed โthe parkโ due to its generous size and lack of fencing. With over 900m2 of land just a stone’s throw from the beach, the potential for transformation was palpable.
Design brief
The vision was clear: to create a home that catered to the needs of a family of six while evoking that coveted holiday feeling year-round. The design would need to accommodate four sons, aged 11 to 19, allowing for both private retreats and communal gathering spaces. Given the sloping sandy block, the new home would be developed over three levels, maximising both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Signature style
The design philosophy followed the SOUL Home signature, characterised by a distinctive 70% classic, 20% organic and 10% resort vibe approach. This fusion manifests in the classic weatherboard facade complemented by a tiled roof and palm trees, extending into the interiors adorned with brass lighting, detailed paneling, and vibrant rattan furnishings. Each element works harmoniously to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels both timeless and refreshing.
Collaborative journey
One of the most delightful surprises of this project was the collaborative spirit fostered between the designer and her husband Ben, of BAM Constructions Group. Despite the challengesโranging from council approval hurdles to engineering adjustments due to the sandy siteโeach obstacle became an opportunity for creativity and innovation. The experience reaffirmed a shared belief that, with trust and direction, the potential for beauty in design is limitless.
Philosophy in action
As an interior designer, the belief that a home should enrich lives underpins every project. This home, built to facilitate a daily escape, showcases how thoughtful design can influence wellbeing. The emphasis on creating โthat holiday feelingโ transforms everyday moments into something special, ensuring that family life is imbued with joy and relaxation.
Navigating challenges
The journey was not without its trials. The design team faced significant setbacks, including multiple council rejections and unexpected engineering changes that impacted the kitchen layout. However, every hurdle served as a catalyst for innovation, leading to design solutions that added unique character to the home.
Personal touches
Unlike previous projects, “The Maybe Forever” was designed with the specific needs and style of the family in mind. This is a home built for living, not merely for sale. Each design choice reflects the family’s identity, ensuring a deeply personal connection to the space.
Favorite spaces
Choosing a favorite spot within the home is nearly impossible, but a few highlights stand out. The home office, with views of a lone palm tree, features a striking travertine oval table that serves as a creative workspace. The kitchen island, featuring a breathtaking Taj Mahal natural stone benchtop, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for family gatherings. Finally, the expansive outdoor balcony provides an ideal space for entertaining, complete with artistic touches that seamlessly conceal the TV, making it perfect for sunset views and gatherings.
The name’s significance
The name “The Maybe Forever” captures the essence of the family’s journey. After years of purchasing, renovating and relocating, the family embraced the uncertainty of the future, allowing for a sense of openness and possibility. The name resonates with the sentiment that while this home feels like a forever home, the journey of life remains an adventure.
Future aspirations
With the project now complete, the family looks forward to creating lasting memories in their new space. They anticipate a summer filled with laughter, poolside fun, and the joy of making the house their own through personal touches and cherished photographs.
As the designer reflects on this journey, she remains committed to sharing her passion for creating homes that inspire a sense of holiday ease and comfort. Future projects are on the horizon, with a focus on guiding others through their own unique build and design journeys.
“The Maybe Forever” stands as a testament to the beauty of personalised design, where each space is crafted with intention and care. Visitors often remark on the uplifting energy that permeates the home, a true reflection of the love and thought invested in every detail. From its inviting facade to its spacious interiors, this home is a beautiful reminder that design can indeed change lives, one space at a time.
