Belongil House, on Byron Bay’s picturesque Belongil Beach, reflects its connection to the landscape, embracing the tranquillity of the creek and nearby beach through a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The single-storey 1950s whaler’s cottage retains its original weatherboard structure at the front, housing the rumpus, three bedrooms and garage, while the exterior received a paint touch-up and restoration work as part of a makeover by architecture, design and construction firm, mckimm.
The extension introduces new living, dining, kitchen, and master suite spaces, defined by a neutral material palette of soft timbers, silver travertine, and polished plaster walls, complemented by concrete floors that add a refined, industrial edge. These materials, chosen for their textural qualities and organic appeal, establish a quiet dialogue with the surrounding landscape.
Inside, curved architectural lines shape the extension, creating a sense of movement and cohesion. Expansive windows frame views of the creek and beach, allowing natural light to animate the spaces throughout the day. Thoughtful spatial transitions foster a sense of retreat while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.
In the dining area, Rachel Donath Cono dining chairs are paired with a custom-designed dining table and bench seats, made locally by Mark Tuckey. The study features an Armadillo rug, while a Tigmi Natura lamp introduces warmth and sculptural detail.
Through careful restoration and the integration of new elements, Belongil House stands as a sanctuary designed to amplify the beauty of its natural surroundings.
