A neat freak’s review of Method cleaning products

By Jen Bishop •

FacebookPinWhatsAppEmailTweet

I get sent ‘stuff’ all the time. Perks of the blog, some might say. But I don’t write about or share things unless I genuinely love them and last week I fell in love with a delivery of Method cleaning products.

120208Kitchen_020 method products daily kitchen

Those who know me well will know I’m a bit of a neat freak. My apartment is rarely less than spotless. My friends worry for the time when I (hopefully) have kids and may spontaneously combust at the thought of everything not being in its place. I’m guessing my priorities may change but it’s hard to imagine right now. Sometimes I actually love cleaning and tidying. I find it therapeutic. Yes, I’m weird. What I don’t like are noxious smells and gross stinky bleach hands. Don’t even get me started on Exit Mould ( but sometimes nothing else will do, right?).

120208Bath_016

So I do love me a good, environmentally friendly, pleasant smelling cleaning product. I’ve always been a big fan of Murchison-Hume. But last week Method Home sent me pretty much their entire range and I was so taken with them, I immediately cleaned the bathroom from top to bottom. And enjoyed it. See, told you I was weird! And now I give you: a neat freak’s Method cleaning products review.

There are two standout products for me. The minty Glass + Surface Cleaner quickly and effortlessly cleaned my mirrors and shower glass to a completely streak-free finish. Sorry Viva Glass and Mirror Wipes, you have been replaced! And the Squirt + Mop Hard Floor Cleaner smelled like lollies and did a great job on both the bathroom tiled floor and kitchen vinyl floor.

120208HandWash_041

They have all manner of spray cleaners (I’ve tried the pink grapefruit and French lavender ones) for multi-surface, wood, granite and stainless steel use. There’s a special bathroom version too and although it doesn’t smell as lovely as the others, I guess it has a tougher job to do, and it does it well.

If you happen to leave these products out (which, I’ll be honest, rarely happens at my place) they look pretty nice too. It’s not expensive either (which I expected). And they make pretty much every kind of cleaning and laundry product you can think of.

What you really need to know about Method products is that they’re non-toxic, biodegradable, do not give off harmful vapours and use high percentages of naturally derived ingredients. They do not contain parabens, bleach, triclosan or ammonia. For the super-sensitive, their Go Naked cleaner is completely fragrance and dye-free. And all their bottles are made from recycled plastic.

I've been meaning to post about getting out of hos I've been meaning to post about getting out of hospital in time for Christmas and spending a magical time with my beautiful family and friends for days now, but I was staying in the moment and off my phone. My wish came true and it really was amazing to enjoy that Santa magic.

Sadly, the day after Boxing Day, I ended up back in an ambulance after an internal bleed where my hemoglobin levels dropped dangerously low. I'm not very good at explaining the medical side, but after surgery and a couple of nights in ICU, I'm now on a ward and recovering well, hoping I get to return home ASAP.

I have so many thank yous to say for the incredible GoFundMe donations and kindness and support I've received. I really am blown away and so grateful. There are so many good people in the world, both strangers and those I'm lucky enough to know.

And having now received 6 bags of blood transfusion myself, another huge shout out to all donors. I felt so good to know I've done my bit donating over the years when I received someone else's life saving donation. Please consider doing the same and potentially saving a life.

Before ending up back in hospital, I was settling in well at home with daily visits from nurses and I'm hoping I can get back to that new normal again soon.

Thank you again to everyone for their kindness. And biggest thanks to @damianfrancis for truly spoiling me at Christmas and once again holding the fort at home. Our boys are so lucky to have you ❤️

Trigger warning: cancer. Home is SO important to Trigger warning: cancer.

Home is SO important to me, I even made a job out of talking about it. And having been stuck in hospital for 5 weeks, away from my sanctuary and my boys, I've never craved it more.

I'm going through the hardest time of my life and I'm finally sharing it here in the way I hope you've always known me to; with authenticity, realness and hope.

I've been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's devastating and life-changing news and feels very vulnerable to share. Sadly it's causing me so much physical pain, I can't manage it at home. Being stuck in hospital, on top of keeping this secret, has been very isolating.

Our precious boys are our number one priority and we are being very well supported by our medical team and amazing friends and family. I can't say enough about the huge role my husband is playing in keeping us together.

I've continued to work when possible because I love it and it's a big part of my identity. I want as much normalcy, distraction and positivity as possible right now. Some days I put my lipstick on and face the day with gratitude for all the good stuff, like my world class friends and amazing healthcare. But I'm only human and other days, I just can't.

Despite the gravity of the situation, I only have to look at my boys to know I cannot give up hope.

Thanks for all the love and support I know you'll throw my way but please respect my boundaries by not asking medical questions or making medical suggestions, and know that I won't be able to reply to everyone.

This beautiful community has supported me for over a decade and I'm sure your kindness will help me no end. And if you want to support me, keep reading the blog so my work isn't wasted!

I'll still be the main point of contact for Interiors Addict but things will look a little different as I continue my chemo (3 rounds down) and get used to my new way of life.

Right now, my only wish is to be discharged to my family for Christmas.

Because I can no longer give blood, if anyone would like to make a festive donation of blood or plasma on my behalf and share it with me here, that would really make my day ❤️

PS. Nurses are worth their weight in gold.

I love method products but I worry that they are not zapping those nasties especially in the toilet! With all my being I hate cleaning the shower and would pay anyone any sum if money for them to do it for me. No help from the rest of the family. They just know how to make grime and mould! After reading this I’m gonna stop being do anal and venture beyond pino clean!

I have to say my least favourite cleaning chore is a toss up between the toilet (I have two in their own little rooms; not in the bathroom) and the recycled hardwood floor which covers the open plan ground floor of our home. I love the general feeling of satisfaction after a good cleaning session 🙂

  6. Lucy says

Oh I can relate Jen! There was nothing like a clean apartment in my single and newly married days! I too almost enjoyed cleaning. But now with a two boys under three and a half, I spend my life cleaning only for it to not stay that way! For more than three seconds! Combine that with moving into our newly renovated house and the inlaws arriving from the UK and me hosting Xmas, I’d love love love to win some Method products to put some of the sparkle back into cleaning for me!!

I do love a good house cleaning session too but I do have to say I really don’t like to clean my shower screens and glass wardrobe doors :/

  13. Lisa Grant says

    October 7, 2013 at 4:24 pm

I too hate those nasties in chemical cleaners but sometimes find myself reaching for the bleach based cleaner rather than my faithful vinegar and water when I feel something warrants a SUPER clean. The Method range sounds fabulous, environmentally friendly and fragrant and I need all the help I can get with two dogs and two teenage children. Shower and toilet vie for top honours in the least favourite task list.

  14. Deb says

    October 7, 2013 at 4:26 pm

I’m not a fan of cleaning at all. I dislike dishwashing, mopping, the toilets and shower, vacuuming and ironing. I used to like it before I was married with a little boy. It would be nice if things could stay clean for longer than it takes for my toddler to wake from his nap. I could use some inspiration with some sweet smelling Method products to put some light into an otherwise joyless job for me.

  15. Tracey says

I absolutely loathe cleaning the oven. The noxious fumes, the greasy build-up of many meals, the arm wearying monotony of it all. Little wonder it’s the job I put off for as long as I can!

  17. Elyse says

    October 7, 2013 at 5:50 pm

For sure the bathroom is like the Bermuda Triangle for me – I’m never sure i’ll get out of there alive! The bathroom floor causes a lot of grief with a dark grey matte tile that seem to show every streak of the mop. I’d love to try something new and have heard great things about Method.

  19. Kim says

I love Method products. The house cleaning job I dislike the most has to be the shower and toilets.

  20. Camilla says

    October 7, 2013 at 7:14 pm

I must say i’m very excited about hearing of this product. My ‘hate household chore’ would have to be the bathroom. I have 3 kids and i too LOVE a spotless house so with 2 bathrooms plus another toilet it is very hard to keep it as “perfectly clean” as i would like. The tiled floors and the shower being my worst nightmare to clean by far!!

  21. Tom Ryan says

    October 7, 2013 at 7:21 pm

Our kitchen is small and old fashioned, not in a cute way but a frustrating awkward way. There is not a lot of storage amd lots of little, hard-to-reach gaps and crevices. Add in a lino floor and the whole thing is a nightmare to clean. It truly requires a zen-like calm along with Cirque de Soleil level contortion so anything that makes it easier or at least more bearable would be a treat

  22. Marijana says

    October 7, 2013 at 8:35 pm

My least favourite would be dusting! Luckily we have very few surfaces and things being displayed so dusting is kept to a minimum. Otherwise I’m also the weird kind of people, who enjoy cleaning and find it therapeutic (if I’m angry with my husband I tend to go and do some cleaning, I’m not joking). And yes even now with kids I still love a clean and tidy house, even though it doesn’t stay (very) clean for long.

  23. Isabella says

    October 7, 2013 at 8:50 pm

I hate (with a passion) everything to do with the kitchen; everything from the dishes, the oven, to the fridge etc etc etc. Not to mention the fact my husband complains every time I start spraying the lemon scented Methylated Spirits (which is every day). Maybe some pretty smelling products will make cleaning the kitchen more fun and my husband will stop nagging about the cleaning product I use..

  24. Alice says

Least favourite chore – getting the gunk out of the grout lines on my tiled floors. Uck. With my first baby arriving in 2 weeks I’d LOVE to win this pack – shiny pretty smelly things will satisfy my primal nesting instincts AND make the inevitable 3am floor scrub-fest a bit more enjoyable…. plus I won’t be worried about using Method products around the new bambino once he’s here. Cross fingers!

  32. Rebecca says

Ugh, it’s hard to pick just one aspect of cleaning that I hate – I’m definitely not one of those people who love to clean! But if I had to pick it would be the bathroom – the cloudy shower screen, the annoying joins between the tiles on the floor and the wall, the base of the toilet that no one ever sees but you just KNOW it’s filthy. With a 2 year old and an asthmatic husband I’m not a fan of the hospital grade bleach so a lovely pack from Method sounds like just the thing to make this tedious job just that bit more enjoyable!

I love to have a very clean home but its not my favourite chore to clean the oven and the stove. I don’t know what to use on the stainless steel to not make it streaky, I resort to using very hot water as I’m scared to mark our brand new stove/oven. Would love to try these products, fingers crossed x

Our recently renovated bathroom is the thing I detest cleaning the most – the glass shower doors, bathroom mirror and taps all need to shine. The honour of cleaning it is now with my husband, as being 31 weeks pregnant my excuse is that I shouldn’t be breathing in any nasty fumes from the cleaning products we use. I wouldn’t be able to use that excuse with Method being chemical free, but hubby doesn’t need to know that!

So would love to try out the Method products.

I hate cleaning the toilet; I suppose it’s because it’s the ickiest. I’ve never tried Method before and I’m going to give these products a go.

    Cheers,
    Lynda.

Ooh I wish I was a cleaner like you! Having been through a very rough year, lately I have only had the energy to do the necessities but I miss the good old days of having a neat and clean home. My least favourite thing to do, and unfortunately one of the most necessary, is the dishes. In fact, I’m off to tackle them now. Sigh.

My least favourite cleaning job is the oven. Sometimes you can’t even see it, but inevitably food gets “baked onto” the bottom, the trays, the racks and the door. I simply cannot use the oven cleaners that work really well as their toxic vapours give me a headache and make me feel unwell and it doesn’t matter how much I scrub with bicarb and vinegar, I just can’t seem to shift the stains. Urgh!

I’m a residential & commercial cleaner. Most clients dislike doing theirbathrooms & kitchen. Method is definitely the secret, providing amazing finishing. From bathroom cleaner,go naked to daily & granite polish. At home, daily shower upkeep my bathrooms’ cleanliness – every 2 days a spray. Thanks Method for the brilliant composition.

Sure cleaning the toilet is gross, yes, scrubbing grout is horrible to, but nothing, and I mean nothing does gross like cleaning out the kitchen compost bin. You’ve got sticky stains, you’ve got hard stains, you’ve got smelly stains. You’ve got that lone fuzzy green orange peel stuck to the bottom. It’s all there.

I don’t have too much of an issue with the shower since I stopped using soap as this is what causes soap scum…
Only use shower gels/wash and use the Method Daily Shower. Though I refuse to wash the toilet. ..my husband does this and I just cannot do it…strange I know )

As much as I love cleaning…yes you heard right I love cleaning so much it is even my day job, there is one job I hate doing more than anything else……..cleaning miss 13’s room…….What is it about teenagers that have that smell in them that smells like a years supply of dirty socks mixed in with last weeks dinner and wet towel smell……I scrub everything down and yet I am left with the satisfaction it is clean but boy can you sure smell the cleaning products, I would love to use cleaning products or try them at least that had an amazing refreshing smell over a chemical smell….anyday

Great informative post, thanks :). I too have used Murchison-Hume for many years but would love to try Method so I know there’s another safe, effective alternative out there. My least favourite chore is grout – in the bathroom, kitchen and floor. It’s almost impossible to keep clean and so time consuming. Windows are a close second…
    Thanks again, Felicity

I don’t like cleaning the shower area – especially my children’s one. They seem to have mini parties while having showers and spread soap all over the glass and tile area. This results in poor mum scrubbing, scrubbing, scrubbing! Method sounds like a wonderful product to get things sparkly clean and smelling sensational without any nasty chemicals or horrid smells.

Ive been meaning to try Method, I find that I am increasingly getting headaches when I use bathroom cleaning products and would like to try something natural. My most hated chore would be a toss up between cleaning the shower or the oven!

I hate the endless cleaning of the “fallout zone”. The area under and around the toddler’s highchair. It’s just such a huge pain after every single meal! We’ve often discussed alternatives to the basic mat, but a skip bin in the dining room might clash with the decor.

2nd time today I am writing this as it seems my first reply disappeared this afternoon…..so here goes the job I hate doing the most would be miss 13’s room that smells like 1 months worth of dirty socks, wet towels and week old dinners….not that there is any food in there just has that smell. I scrub everything down till I am happy with it as it seems the lil monster who promises to clean it falls on deaf ears. Between doing her windows and walls along with her desk, dusting you name it and the fact that when it is done it looks like magic I am always overwhelmed by the residue smell left by the chemicals. I work as a cleaner and love to clean both at work and at home but it seems odd to me that the chemicals for home cleaning seem to leave more of a chemical smell than the ones at work go figure……..

My least favourite chore is definately cleaning out the vegetable crisper at the end of a long working week, no matter what I do, there’s always something composting in the bottom – eeeew gross to touch 🙁 On the upside – Method is brilliant and I love it, but it’s such a shame it disappeared from Safeway/Woolworths as my house was always so clean (except the crisper lol) and it always smelled gorgeous 🙂

ha – just stumbled across this page as I was researching Method products. I’ve used the spray cleaners and dish soap. They work well enough.

Ummm, I love to clean. I get it from my grandmother and mother. You’d have a tough time competing with either of them (I’m one of ten).

My mother was the queen of cleaning (mopped floors at least once a day). As kids (4-7 year olds), she showed us how to prepare a pail and gave us each our own little scrub brushes.

In my thirties, I could rip through my entire apartment in 4-5 hours. The result — my sister once visited and as she walked through commented to my niece, “take note. this is the cleanest bachelor apartment you will EVER see…” ha ha ha

My best sleep (I kid you not) occurred as I dozed off reflecting on how clean things would be when I woke up.

As an aside, I am attracted to Method products because of their assertion that they are bio-friendly. However, I never took organic chem in college — so I’m taking that on faith. (Some chem major in a masters/doctoral program should reval their assertion…)

BTW – have a child. It’s unclear which side my daughter will end up on (when I married my wife she was a amateur clean freak – but it only took one kid to beat that out of her), but the joy of parenthood far surpasses the distress of multiple “dirty” surfaces throughout the house…ha ha ha.

Anyway, thanks for the post. I feel less alone. And I am CERTAIN you have slept well…
