Sibella Court and Karen McCartney at Sydney Writers’ Festival

Interiors royalty Sibella Court and Karen McCartney are both speaking at a free event as part of Sydney Writers’ Festival next month.

I’m sure you already know, but Sibella is a renowned stylist and Karen is the founding editor of Inside Out magazine. Both have several books to their name.

The event, Bowerbird, is on 24 May from 10am to 11am at The Mint in Macquarie Street. Bookings not essential. More info here.

You’re invited! New Sibella Court book launch

Sibella Court’s new book, Bowerbird, is being launched at her shop The Society Inc, on Saturday 6 October from 3 to 6pm. Not just that, she’ll also be launching her new The Society Inc. soap and hardware ranges and a new palette of chalkboard paints.

Where: The Society Inc. 18 Stewart Street Paddington NSW 2021

When: Saturday 6 October 2012 3-6pm

Pre-order Sibella Court’s latest book, Bowerbird

Who doesn’t love a new Sibella Court book? Bowerbird is almost with us. Yay! The bestselling author of Etcetera, The Stylist’s Guide to NYC and Nomad, has always been a bowerbird. This was first noticed when, at the age of three, she put together collections of shells, sequins, beads and ribbons. Like her avian counterpart, she goes far and wide to add to her collections, enjoys arranging and rearranging the pieces and, ultimately, believes that collections, containing the memories they do, are a vital part of any home.

In Bowerbird, Sibella reveals her very personal and surprising approach to collecting and collections. She shows how to procure the elements of a collection, how to organise and store them, and how to display them in creative and ever-changing ways. With the help of Bowerbird, you will view your belongings in a whole new light. [Read more...]

Sibella Court’s Bowerbird book out in October

Sibella Court is such a machine. It only seems like yesterday I went to the launch of her last book, Nomad. The new one, Bowerbird, is due out in October. She’s going to be releasing some special postcards to accompany the book but she can’t decide on the final edit so she’s asking for your help. You can find mroe details and vote for your favourites here.

Two new Sibella Court workshops

Get in quick! Stylist Sibella has announced a couple of new Sydney workshops.

The first is a three-hour walking tour of some of the spots she has designed the interiors of, including my personal favourite Ms G’s, as well as Upstairs at the Beresford, El Loco and her latest, The Fish Shop. Drinks included. Sounds fun!

The second is all about colour and will take place at Sun Studios in Alexandria, where she’ll create an entire set based on a colour palette.

Garage sale at Sibella’s. You’d be crazy to miss it!

It’s the stuff of a wannabe stylist’s dreams! This Saturday 5 May, Sibella Court is one of hundreds of people holding a garage sale as part of the Garage Sale Trail initiative, of which she’s an ambassador. Just imagine the treasures you could pick up in the name of sustainability and recycling!

“As you can imagine, from a 20-year career as a stylist and globetrotter I have quite the collection of oddities and curiosities,” she says. “Each and every piece was painstakingly wrapped and shipped when I moved my studio and storage from New York to Sydney. The time has finally come to say farewell to many of my objets, props, fabric by-the-yard, plates, cutlery, clothing, shoes, doors, souvenirs and bits n’ bobs. We are clearing out the cupboards and attic, or rather making room for new collections.”

Sibella and her assistants Hannah and Leah will be running the sale outside her shop The Society Inc. in Sydney’s Paddington. “We’ll be on hand to tell you what’s what and explain how the blue striped turban made it from the cameleer’s head to The Society Inc. and other wonderful objet histories. Come and discover a 3D timeline of my travels and life and take a piece home with you!”

Now who can say no to that?!

9am to 5pm | The Society Inc. | 18 Stewart Street | Paddington | NSW 2021

Martha meets Sibella

Martha Stewart’s in Sydney and she popped into stylist Sibella Court’s Paddington store The Society Inc today. How cool is that?

Sibella Court workshop on commercial spaces

If you’re interested in styling commercial spaces then Sibella Court’s latest workshop Commercial Concepts could be just for you.

Learn about the ins and outs of designing a commercial space on 8 February 2012 from 6.30pm. Super stylist Sibella will hold court (pardon the pun) in one of the spaces she has designed. She will discuss the entire process: coming up with a brief, concept development, colour palette, furniture and finishes, installation and final touches.

You will be able to understand how commercial interiors come to be through physical examples of the space that you are in. Chat with Sibella about how research and history creates a strong conceptual foundation and how the steps that follow are all based on this.

Shopping, sourcing, creating a colour palette, applying an idea to space, considering seating and floorplan, arranging furniture, art installation and styling will all be discussed.

Location still to be disclosed but it will be a venue that Sibella has designed in Sydney city (Interiors Addict would guess it’ll be one of the Merivale bars/restaurants). Complimentary alcoholic drink on arrival.

Buy your ticket ($80 each) here.

Launch day! Mr Jason’s Grant’s Murobond colours & Sibella Court’s new book, Nomad

What an exciting day out for Interiors Addict! Not only was it the launch of Mr Jason’s Grant’s new colours for Murobond, it was also our first meeting IN REAL LIFE. Very exciting and he was as delightful as I expected!

I went along to the launch at Murobond in Artarmon with my friend Emma Blomfield from Nest Designs. It was also great to meet Juliet Arent from Arent & Pyke and stylist Jane Frosh. Jason’s new colour range, aptly named Road Trip, is gorgeous and inspired by summer. I was excited to find the PERFECT teal in there called Deep Sea Dreaming.

Later on we went to the launch of Sibella Court’s new book, Nomad at her shop The Society Inc. As a massive fan of Etcetera, I can’t wait to get stuck into my (signed, of course) copy! There I bumped into Jason again (gee, stop stalking me!) and took a rather cute photo of him and Sibella together. Was also great to meet Belle Coco Republic Interior Designer of the Year Greg Natale, another Interiors Addict past interviewee.

It’s just too much interiors-related excitement for a girl. I need a sit down and a cup of tea…

Sibella’s Souvenirs of Etcetera

I really am beginning to wonder if stylist Sibella Court ever sleeps? She’s been busy sourcing inspiration overseas, she’s about to embark on publicity for her new book NOMAD, she’s planning her next styling workshop later this month and now she’s curating exhibitions!

If you loved her cult book Etcetera (I don’t know anyone who’s into interiors who doesn’t have a copy), you’re going to love this. “I am creating an installation so you can explore within life-size pages of Etcetera,” she says. “At Barometer Gallery, you can touch, see, marvel and enjoy, as if you are within the photographs, discovering them in a space that you exist in, rather than the book that you hold within your hands.”

The exhibition, sponsored by Absolut, is made up of her favourite images from the book, taken by her brother, photographer Chris Court. She also asked fans to tell her which photographs they found most inspiring.

“You will be able to feel and experience all the special textured papers that make up Etcetera. Choose and purchase your favourite photographs based on both content, scale and paper textures. This is part installation, part photography, and part paper exhibition.”

Exhibition dates:

Opening Night: Tuesday 15 November, 5-7pm

Open: Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 November, 12-6pm

Exhibition Event: Q&A with Sibella and Chris Court, Saturday 19 November, 2-4pm.
