Mr Jason Grant’s book, A Place Called Home

Tomorrow I’m off to the Sydney launch of stylist Jason Grant’s first book, A Place Called Home, so it’s about time I reviewed it for you!

If you know MJG, or follow him on social media, you’ll know this is a project that has taken over his life for a good year. Luckily he is DELIGHTED with how it turned out and I can see why. It feels like if Jason was a book, this would be it.

It’s light on words and heavy on beautiful images by photographer James Geer. And let’s face it, who has time to actually read their coffee table books anyway?! I actually devoured this book in one enjoyable afternoon, but it’s the sort of book you’ll want to dip back in and out of on rainy afternoons, especially as its many photos of the beach and Bondi will bring back memories of summer.

Mr Jason Grant A Place Called Home 3

Jason is a well known freelance interior stylist and was previously style director of Real Living, who he still works for, alongside almost every other Australian homes magazine. He was also one of the very first people I interviewed for Interiors Addict! Jason has his own paint ranges for Murobond and recently styled Freedom’s new winter collection for its catalogue and advertising. [Read more...]

This year’s Life Instyle Sydney

Can you believe this was my first ever visit to Life Instyle? It definitely has a very different, more boutique feel than the other trade fairs and I really enjoyed it. Despite skipping most of Kids Instyle (not my bag) there were still plenty of beautiful wares to look at. Here are a few of my favourites.

Life InstyleMy favourite stand belonged to Mrs Darcy (originally of Ada & Darcy fame). I love Kellie Collis’ colourful designs. There were plenty of new things, like gold chevron cushions (just when you think you’ve seen enough chevron you realise you need some gold chevron in your life!), gorgeous girly robes, hand creams and candles. Her floral textiles are just beautiful.

I also stopped by my favourite Voyager Candles’ stand for a sniff, went nuts over the paper goods at Bespoke Letterpress, admired the new Cool Edie’s paint colours at the Murobond stand and fell in love with everything at Bonnie and Neil (gorgeous new bed linen and ceramics mean even more places to use their gorgeous and colourful designs in your home). Cool Edie’s team up with Murobond on glam and fun paint range

The ladies at Cool Edie’s are the latest stylists to team up with Murobond on their own paint range, and very cool it is too.

Jane Frosh and Lucy Weight have come up with four colours: a matt black (of course), a gold, an almost-emerald green (how on-trend) and a peach.

“We wanted a set of colours that really represented the Australian interiors industry as it stands and our Cool Edie’s approach to styling. A matt black (Cool Edie’s Religion), because it directly reflects on Cool Edie’s, our religion if you will. Who doesn’t love a matt black? It neutralises all other colours and adds a tough, chic element to any interior.

“The gold, well, does that need explaining?! Gold is a sense of humour, a touch of glam, a pop of insanity, hence the name Confetti Bomb. Boom! It just reeks of fun and parties and frocks and laughter. [Read more...]

A peek inside the world of interior decorator and long-time collector Lynda Gardener

Interior decorator and shop owner Lynda Gardener is a hoarder in the best possible sense. Scouring every corner of country Victoria for industrial treasures, she collects them to use in her homes and decorating projects and, if we’re lucky, to sell in her wonderful store Empire Vintage, in Melbourne’s Albert Park.

She admits though, that her longstanding storage unit is packed to the rafters and getting out of control and, following the most recent renovation of the shop, she’ll be bringing more out to sell to lucky customers after Christmas. “I still have finds in there from 20 years ago,” says Lynda. “I have collected for a very long time and over the years have put much of it aside. Next year I am going to start going through my storage unit and bringing those items forward to be showcased at Empire. It’s about time I started to sell them rather than collect and keep everything, so there will be some wonderful items sifting through the store over the coming year or years (I do have a lot of stock)!”

She has owned Empire Vintage for 18 years. The recent renovation saw it go from two floors to one with the staircase removed to give more space. “I decided to use the wasted space above and beyond eye level and asked my favourite builder to build me pigeon holes that would take up two of the walls.” Adding to her desire for an old corner shop feel, there is a ladder to climb up to the highest shelves that can be wheeled around and makes a great feature. The previously pure white walls were painted in moody colours from stylist (and Lynda’s friend) Mr Jason Grant’s range for Murobond, to create a more dramatic look, and custom lighting added. Mr Jason Grant’s third paint collection for Murobond

Sydney super stylist Mr Jason Grant has created a third colour collection, Gray Scale Garden, for Murobond. It’s available to buy from tomorrow but I’m excited to share a sneaky peek with you here.

I asked MJG a few questions about the latest range and his love of paint…

Gray Scale Garden: why the name? It seemed fitting as the collection started with shades of grey and I do love nature. My starting point was old world. Currently I’m really into all things from the Victorian era. Everything has to have a story, it helps me with the creative process.

How would you describe this collection? How does it differ from the last one? The third collection is moodier and perhaps more sophisticated
. Perhaps I’m exploring my darker side of colour.

What inspired it? I wanted the collection to feel like a change in season. I wanted a more winter feel but of course with a few pops of colour.

I love grey. I was once told in a colour workshop that grey is a great complement to every colour. Do you agree? Grey is friends with everyone. It’s a fantastic shade and definitely one of my favorites.

Why do you love to paint? Painting is just a simple way of transforming a wall, a room or a piece of furniture. Paint and colour create feelings and moods. It’s about how something looks and how in turn that makes you feel.

What else are you working on at the moment? Something very exciting. I will let you know soon…

Jason talks more about the collection in the current issue of House & Garden magazine. Read my interview with him from last year here and visit his blog here.

Murobond colour workshops with stylist Melinda Ashton Turner

One of my favourite paint companies has announced some fab sounding colour workshops for the next few months, headed up by Melinda Ashton Turner. Not only does she have an uber impressive career as a stylist, she recently started her own blog all about colour, so who better?

Using paint can be one of the cheapest and easiest ways to create the most dramatic effects in a room but there’s so much choice, many people don’t know where to start. Either that or they play it safe with one of the countless off-whites out there. In recent years people have gone crazy for the feature wall, but interiors folk remain divided on whether it’s a must-have or a big no-no that has fallen out of fashion. What do you think?

Anyway, if you’d like to learn more from someone with heaps of experience, you should try one of these workshops. They’re for a maximum of eight people so spaces get snapped up fast. The workshops aren’t just generic talks about paint and colour schemes so you can expect to learn a lot and take away a healthy dose of inspiration. Choose from:

  • Creating a colour palette
  • Injecting colour
  • Proportion of colour
  • Tonal colour schemes.

Find out more and book here.

After originally training as an interior designer, Melinda forged a successful career as an interior stylist and art director and recently returned to Sydney after 11 years in the UK. Her high profile career has seen her work on publications including Vogue Living, Homes & Gardens (UK), Elle Decoration, Living Etc and Belle. She has worked on advertising campaigns for the likes of Jo Malone and Harrods.

Murobond stocks paint ranges by our favourite Mr Jason Grant (who is currently working on his latest colours and promises to show us soon!) and Sibella Court’s The Society Inc range.

Mr Jason Grant’s new colour range for Murobond is inspired by summer

Bondi boy Mr Jason Grant loves summer and the beach and his second paint collection with Murobond consists of faded fun colours. Titled Road Trip, the collection is all about a summer getaway.

These photos were shot on location in Avalon NSW with a super cute kombi van, one of Jason’s dream cars.

“I LOVE colour so have included some fun bursts of colour mixed with some cool neutrals,” he says.

Drawing inspiration from the everyday and the hundreds of photos he takes, each colour has a story and a reference from his adventures. ‘Short Shorts’ came from a perfectly faded pair of shorts a friend wore over to his house, ‘Smoothie’ is the perfect shade of soft yellow (Yay! A yellow!) just like a classic banana smoothie, ‘Happy Days’ is just like a clear blue sky and ‘Porch’ is like a perfect weathered piece of timber.

The collection is available as of tomorrow (Saturday 5 November 2011) and I can’t wait to attend the launch!
