Mr Jason Grant’s book, A Place Called Home

Tomorrow I’m off to the Sydney launch of stylist Jason Grant’s first book, A Place Called Home, so it’s about time I reviewed it for you!

If you know MJG, or follow him on social media, you’ll know this is a project that has taken over his life for a good year. Luckily he is DELIGHTED with how it turned out and I can see why. It feels like if Jason was a book, this would be it.

It’s light on words and heavy on beautiful images by photographer James Geer. And let’s face it, who has time to actually read their coffee table books anyway?! I actually devoured this book in one enjoyable afternoon, but it’s the sort of book you’ll want to dip back in and out of on rainy afternoons, especially as its many photos of the beach and Bondi will bring back memories of summer.

Mr Jason Grant A Place Called Home 3

Jason is a well known freelance interior stylist and was previously style director of Real Living, who he still works for, alongside almost every other Australian homes magazine. He was also one of the very first people I interviewed for Interiors Addict! Jason has his own paint ranges for Murobond and recently styled Freedom’s new winter collection for its catalogue and advertising. [Read more...]

This year’s Life Instyle Sydney

Can you believe this was my first ever visit to Life Instyle? It definitely has a very different, more boutique feel than the other trade fairs and I really enjoyed it. Despite skipping most of Kids Instyle (not my bag) there were still plenty of beautiful wares to look at. Here are a few of my favourites.

Life InstyleMy favourite stand belonged to Mrs Darcy (originally of Ada & Darcy fame). I love Kellie Collis’ colourful designs. There were plenty of new things, like gold chevron cushions (just when you think you’ve seen enough chevron you realise you need some gold chevron in your life!), gorgeous girly robes, hand creams and candles. Her floral textiles are just beautiful.

I also stopped by my favourite Voyager Candles’ stand for a sniff, went nuts over the paper goods at Bespoke Letterpress, admired the new Cool Edie’s paint colours at the Murobond stand and fell in love with everything at Bonnie and Neil (gorgeous new bed linen and ceramics mean even more places to use their gorgeous and colourful designs in your home). Cool Edie’s team up with Murobond on glam and fun paint range

The ladies at Cool Edie’s are the latest stylists to team up with Murobond on their own paint range, and very cool it is too.

Jane Frosh and Lucy Weight have come up with four colours: a matt black (of course), a gold, an almost-emerald green (how on-trend) and a peach.

“We wanted a set of colours that really represented the Australian interiors industry as it stands and our Cool Edie’s approach to styling. A matt black (Cool Edie’s Religion), because it directly reflects on Cool Edie’s, our religion if you will. Who doesn’t love a matt black? It neutralises all other colours and adds a tough, chic element to any interior.

“The gold, well, does that need explaining?! Gold is a sense of humour, a touch of glam, a pop of insanity, hence the name Confetti Bomb. Boom! It just reeks of fun and parties and frocks and laughter. [Read more...]

Life Instyle teams up with Jane Frosh & Lucy Weight of Cool Edie’s to launch Style Lab

I’m beyond excited about the latest initiative from Life Instyle. Style Lab is a new interactive concept, in collaboration with Jane Frosh and Lucy Weight of styling house, Cool Edie’s. I love those two and their work!

The concept will be unveiled during the trade fair’s first event of 2013, held at Sydney’s Royal Hall of Industries & Hordern Pavilion from 21-to-24 February.

Style Lab will explore the elements of style and creativity through a series of changing scenes, designed and created live each morning by Jane and Lucy. “The importance of creativity and style has always been at the heart of our events,” says exhibition manager, Amelia Coote-Harris. “We’re excited to introduce an interactive element this year and to be teaming up with the Cool Edie’s team, who share our passion and vision.” [Read more...]

Guest post: Abigail Ahern’s Sydney masterclass

Abigail, after a horror 48-hour flight from London, arrived in Melbourne hours before her first round of masterclasses and then flew on to Sydney to deliver her class again at Megan Morton’s The School to a room full of Sydney (and New Zealand!) based designers, stylists and interior fanatics.

Aussie stylist Jane Frosh with Abigail Ahern

Abigail is a fun, creative, headstrong soul who scoffs at rules and appears determined to break them. She doesn’t take herself or her branding too seriously which, I believe, is part of her charm. Her talent is outside the box and unconventional.

Her constant references to Alice In Wonderland had the group hanging off her every word. She mixes up scale and proportion, adding friction and grandeur to an interior. Her moody, muted colour palette is both rock & roll and also warm and comforting. [Read more...]

Stylist Jane Frosh puts her mark on Sydney’s hottest new hotel, QT

Stylist Jane Frosh recently got to work on Sydney’s most exciting new hotel in years, the QT, in the historic Gowings building. She was contracted to design and style the original, heritage listed, Art Deco cabinets on the lobby level and the day spa.

“My concept was to blend the history of the Gowings building with the new funky design of the hotel build,” says Jane. “Gowings was a turn of the century department store. Country folk came to the city and went to Gowings to get a haircut, to have a suit made, to buy underwear etc. Consequently I decided to use paper, string, hessian and women’s underwear to build a concept. The result was an amazing combination of texture, pared back with neon pink (a colour used predominately in the hotel, along with Ives Klein blue), form and story.”

(Why am I not surprised Jane used neon?!) [Read more...]

Chance to buy stylist’s home, straight off the cover of Country Style

Not just any old home makes it onto the cover of Country Style. Stylist Jane Frosh’s did, and now it’s up for sale. Together with husband Mike, she has transformed this charming Blue Mountains home over the last three years but the lure of a new renovation project now has them looking to sell.

“We bought just over three years ago. From the street it was a pretty uninspiring, albeit a cute turn of the century weatherboard miner’s cottage. It was nothing that special until we walked in the front door! It was so warm and comforting with weatherboards to the ceiling, wide floorboards, lots of original features and so much space!” 300 square metres in fact, plus 2,400 square metres of garden. “That’s around 10 parcels of land in Annandale,” as Jane points out.

Vintage Schmintage

i tend to believe that by the time ‘everybody’  catches on to something, it is well and truly over… you know?

as well as styling interiors, i also design, style and implement events.  corporate. PR. product launches. and, yes…weddings.

hmmm.  and herein lies the problem.

go back for a second to statement number one.

‘i tend to believe that by the time ‘everybody’ catches on to something, it is well and truly over.’

on the whole, i love dealing with brides.  their enthusiasm is boundless…their passion second to none.  I love it.  really.

until they say this.  ”i want something really different.  something no one has done before.  something VINTAGE”.

ok.

then they will go on to say “i like typewriters..a want a whole table of typewriters…..and mason jars filled with flowers,. you know,.flowers that a sweet seven year-old girl with flowing flaxen locks and a white cotton dress has lovingly plucked from a field and shoved into a jam jar.  and i want a field covered with bunting, bunting that flutters in the warm breeze.  oh,..and I LOVE VINTAGE mismatched crockery and whimsical pink champagne glasses.  and VINTAGE cameras.  and vintage suitcases stuffed with apples.  and a DESSERT or lolly table with a vintage tablecloth! and CUPCAKES!  you know? something DIFFERENT….something vintage, vintage, VINTAGE!’.

yah.  different.  totally different to all the other millions of folk who also wanted something different.

and, that’s ok.  i’ll totally deliver that.  it’ll be dreamy, and romantic and whimsical and VINTAGE.  but different?  not so much.

i think all the vintage is becoming souless.  people are trying so hard to add character and personality through ‘vintage’ that they are ending up doing the exact opposite. their events are looking like carbon copies of the event that was held in the same ‘vintage friendly’ venue the week before.

the same goes for interiors.  has anyone watched The Block recently?  it’s all replica furniture and vintage styling.  mainstream.  safe.  dull.

so..  here’s a shout out to the world.  let’s move on from vintage, folk!  Let’s find something else to love, something else to be inspired by…and something else to lust after.

United we can do it!  Call me..I’ll help you.

Jane

disclaimer *none of the above was EVER uttered by any of my gorgeous clients.  well… not entirely.*

Back to school with Megan Morton

Two ladies in fabulous dresses: Holly Hipwell (left) and Megan Morton (right)

Some weeks ago, I received an email from the divine Megan Morton ( I love getting emails from MM, they are always so much fun!). It went something like this:

‘have you seen that new place?’ asked the elephant to the mouse.

(random, I know, but stay with me..)

‘there’s tables and plates and classes and flowers and candles and

felt and pom-poms (she had me at pom-poms!) and art and rugs and

teapots and knick knacks and vases and gloves and mantelpieces and

books and workshops and,….

‘oh STOP!’ cried the mouse,

‘it sounds TOO FANTASTIC’.

Woah. Who could knock back an invitation like that? Oh, and the opportunity to make flower bombs with the divine Holly Hipwell of The Flower Drum. By the way, isn’t Holly Hipwell the coolest name ever?! Well, she lives up to her name.

So, on Saturday I popped along to ‘the school’ at 85 Dunning Avenue,  Rosebery, (same building as koskela and Kitchen by Mike) with a whole bunch of other super-cool folk. After having a chuckle with the likes of Mr Jason Grant, Ann-Maree Sargeant, Viv Mansour (ish & chi), Tamara Maynes and Pepa Martin from Shibori, we got to work. With carnations, and rosé (the gay man’s beer, according to MJG!) served in divine vintage crystal glasses. And, yes, carnations! They are apparently the best to make flower bombs with. Who knew? Holly Hipwell, that’s who!

After choosing bunches of brightly coloured carnations, we spent a while cutting carnation stems (chatting), pushing carnation stems into balls of florist’s foam (drinking rosé), and taking numerous amusing photos! A totally fabulous afternoon. 33 glorious, creative people, Megan Morton, Holly Hipwell, an amazing space and a whole bunch of carnations.

The best school ever! Thank you divine MM. It was, indeed, divine!
